I think the best policy with DIM is to keep a shortcut handy on your desktop and use that to run DIM. I keep mine with my DS shortcut. You can also put it on the start menu or taskbar, whatever works best.
I don't use a download system since I have a custom library setup that isn't DIM or Central friendly, I was just asking since it seemed strange that the DIM option was missing.
You can download with DIM and install manually, if desired - that way you would get update notifications.
I was under the understanding that you would have to have DIM on and you can't have DIM and studio open at the same time.

..exatcly,.. I'll never use Connect or Central as they put [stuff] on my small C: drive.
unless you edit the settings to use a different location.

Is Daz Studio now called Daz Central?DAZ Central is not the best choice to install products. Especially the products containing scripts tend to fail miserably when installed with DAZ Central. After it has been messing up my machine quite often, I now wouldn't touch it with a very long pole.
What happened to Manual Downloads?
This is what I'm seeing. This is all I'm seeing on everything. It telling me to download daz central and no other option.
Is Daz Studio now called Daz Central?Daz Central wouldn't let me install any of my content until I had installed Daz. But Daz was already installed. It was annoying that it couldn't tell that, and that it was trying to force me.Is Daz Studio now called Daz Central?memcneil70 said:
Another reason to use DIM is that scripts and plug-ins often need it to install correctly and work, where if they are installed by Daz Central or manually they won't work.
As someone whose C: drive is maxed out on one computer, I recommend not only content installing on your larger drives D: or F: (whichever designation you have) but see if you can install your program as well. I am not sure it is possible, but I wish I had. All the Daz3D files for the program are giving me fits, along with other artistic programs.
I have always installed scripts and plugins manually and have never had a problem with them working, I have never needed to use any of the download apps, except twice, one for a product that you can't get unless you use one of the apps, the second was a dll or something I had missing in my program and there was no other way to install it.
Is Daz Studio now called Daz Central?I tried Central once and it messed with my old PC so badly that I had to make a new setup of the whole system. Since then Central is the one way I never will recommend to anyone. Quite the contrary I discourage its use. Especially for those who use script products. DIM is the way I prefer.

Well if you are a new user you probably would want to start with Daz Central. It is suggested that you use one of the 2 forms of installers to install Daz Studio because you can get all updates as soon as they are offered and doesn't have to take word of mouth that there is an update or even a new version and the same goes for all the products. If your a NU then you probably would want to start out with what is suggested. I do however think that there should be a notation that you can also obtain the installer through your product library for those who prefer.
That should have been self-evident to whoever created the link, but apparently not.
Now even old users think, DAZ Central is the new and only way to install DS and the results can be seen here on the forums every day, and not in a positive way.

If you install from Smart Content, that is the only version that Daz studio will see. Even if you also install manually, with Daz Central, or Daz Install Manager (DIM), all those versions will be ignored by Daz Studio. In order for Daz Studio to see any of the other installations, you first need to uninstall the product from within Daz Studio Smart Content. Some products don't work properly when installed from within Daz Studio. Daz is trying to fix that, but I don't think all problems are resolved yet. So I suggest that you uninstall the product from Smart Content and then install it with DIM.
I just un-installed from Daz and the instal manager, whats weird is it now loads from "My Library" just fine.....
Now to get it to load as Smart Content

It appears to me that those who are new to DAZ will look at the top menu bar of any DAZ web page and see A menu option with the words 'Download Studio'. Look now yourself and see where it takes you. THE ONLY PROGRAM MENTIONED ON THAT PAGE IS DAZ CENTRAL. No download of Studio is mentioned anywhere. What are new users expected to think? As Lukon says, they will think DAZ Studio == DAZ Central. No better way possible to put them off. Well done web designer.

How to get 8.1 charactersNoah LGP said:
Genesis 8 Starter Essentials provide the basic female/male figures for Genesis 8 and 8.1.
If you are looking for Victoria or Michael, the core figures are sold seperately
Thanks. It is the starter essentials i am trying to get. In previous upgrades that have appeared in DS, this time they have not. I never got the DS installer to work properly before so it may be that Daz Central still does not work, so I will have to manually install the starter pack (I prefer doing that as I know where everything is). Is there a way I can get at the starter essentials on their own rather that by installing all of DS through Daz Central, or at least manually downlaod DS and manually install avoiding Daz Central?
How to get 8.1 charactersYou have to download and install the essential files that go along with the Daz Studio app, should be in your library along with the DS download. I never use central so can't help with that.
How to get 8.1 charactersI am sure I am missing something basic here; just downloaded the newest Daz (through Daz Central- still not sure what that does other than add a layer of complexity). How do I get to the base 8.1 characters? I was expecting them to be a category in "people" or within the "G8" folders but they are not. I also loaded a new G8M character through Daz Central and can't find that either- it is not in the G8M folder.
