Thank you - so I'm not missing something. I'm using 3Delight & from what you're saying that does not support double sided. I use Sketchup because I'm familiar with it & have a stock of models - it's simpler to use that rather than trying to learn a new modelling tools whilst learning Daz.

I've noticed an odd behaviour when trying to get a model from Sketchup to Daz3D. 

Having read other threads I have adopted the Sketchup --> collada --> Blender --> obj --> Daz3d - which works, with caveats.

Sketchup allows the two sides of a surface to have different colours and/or textures. However, I can only get the above process to work if both sides of a surface have the same colour and/or texture. Now I know the workflow, anything I make I follow those rules & it works - but it can be a bit tedious (especially as sometimes the "other side" of a surface is hard to reach).

So - am I missing something? Is there a way to get each side of a surface to retain its colour/texture through the above process (i.e. not having to make both sides of all surfaces the same?

Shaders are program specific. And IMHO Sketchup models belong in Sketchup and/or Google Earth, not Daz Studio. Some seem to like them in Poser.

To have both sides of one face normal individually textured requires the use of a double-sided shader.

I've been looking for arcade game cabinet 3D assets for an idea I had in mind. What's been 'officially released' in the various stores for Daz I've honestly been less than thrilled with. Plus I'd prefer to have actual game cabs for this idea anyway. Thankfully there's quite a few out there in other formats. But I'm running into a really weird issue with textures and I'm not entirely sure why. The items are all in OBJ format though I did try a few different paths to get them in that state. Which I'll explain in a bit.

So here's Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 in Texture Shaded mode in the first image. Looks relatively OK. But when I go for Iray preview (and this does happen in full render as well) certain textures (especially on the control panel) get weird in Iray. And the result can even change if you change the perspective a bit. The Midway logo on the right hand side gives different rendering results. That's not the only thing I've seen do weird things like that. Multiple parts of the control panel, the marquee, and sometimes the side art will do that depending on the viewing angle. And I'm not sure why.

One thing I have figured out is that it doesn't seem dependent on the asset or how it eventually got into the OBJ format. I had another cab (Wrestlemania) that ran into similar issues. And the application source doesn't seem to have any bearing either. UMK3 was originally a Sketchup file and Wrestlemania was in 3DSMax. I pretty much run into this regardless of how I eventually got the OBJ version.

Any ideas?

If you notice in this clip, when the lecturer explained the visual appearance of a letter, the letter flips upside down to become another letter, and it bends backwards while in the process.  It's unfortunate that the Muppet had to resort to plan B (this skit does not involve the letter B, by the way) to conclude his lecture, thanks to the very uncooperative letter.

Is there any way I could create a letter and possibly add morphs to allow for a bending ability like in this skit?  I know I could create any letter object in Sketchup using a simple font, and export it into an OBJ file.

I can explain. no, that'll take too long, I'll sum up instead. Lost my installer disk for trueSpace 4.3, Lost my will to model over time as work and life and a fecked up shoulder cut in, did learn Sketchup, tried to bring her in, but never worked right.. 

untill this new addon for Sketchup. ok the imports not perfect and she'll need a complete mesh overhaul. but, this is a major restart and I'm kinda buzzin! (I had to goback to a file from 2009!!!!! ...packrat? me? noooo no no no no..yes)

Hmmm... looks fine, indeed not very realistic :D and... I wanna do indeed more the scenes inside the castle, so I guess the easy way would be finding medival/castle interiors and try to redesign it with school elements. Old British school Elements.

In the Daz Store you find mainly American Highschool stuff -_-.... I dont like the US Highschool...

I am not a lawyer, but I did read an article awhile ago that was written by a lawyer (sorry, never saved a link). In essence he said that so-called fanart of any kind, including cosplay, was not exempt from copyright laws. He went on to say that just because copyright holders may not exercise their legal rights when it comes to fanart, that does not make it legal. So really, it comes down to how aggressive the copyright holders wish to be about protecting their rights. Personally, I believe that the only safe approach (apart from not doing it at all, of course), would be to:

a) avoid trying to monetize what you are doing;

b) avoid making exact copies of the original works;

c) stick to displaying your fanart and avoid distributing it;

d) acknowledge the copyright holders of the the original works upon which the fanart is based; and

e) ensure that your fan art is respectful of the original and not something the copyright holders would find offensive.

The latter is purely my personal opinion, and not a legal opinion, and is based upon a due diligence approach to the matter.

Ho bisogno che sia fatta a "simbolo del Tao" (o Ying/Yang se vi suona più familiare) con le parti bianca e nera che siano in effetti due prop distinti, una semplice cornicetta dal profilo a settore di cerchio in basso a tenerla insieme (un prop distinto anche lei) e varie "material zone" per le zone bianca e nera, i cerchietti interni (facciamo separabili anche quelli, quindi in pratica dei cilindrini?), i lati e la cornice.

L'uso ideale, oltre che per figure in stile orientale, sarebbe come stand per coppie lui/lei, buono/cattivo, umano/tecno e cose del genere, quindi secondo me potrebbe diventare un articolo tutto sommato vendibile sullo store.

Nota: - ho il portafoglio in arranco, quindi se il prezzo è un po' consistente (a meno che non accettiate pagamenti rateali ) si tratterà di un lavoro da far partire da qui a un po' di tempo.

I didn't get why that particular mesh was trouble tho (ok it's academic now)... I've been modeling since the mid 90s, (POVray > TrueSpace 2-3-4, some Lightwave and 3D Studio r4, > Sketchup. I put out 5 or 6 sets for Poser 4/5/6)... I had no issues with 7/pro.. it's only 8+ that things went south. 

 

ach dunno why I'm even posting this particular reply now LOL... I think it's just dumping Poser and moving to more Pro tools has been very eyeopening an freeing... tho I find that DS is limiting but thats only used for when I need a human. tho if it don't stop reverting posed figures back to the basic T on export it will get a punch up the bracket....

 

If you need humans that are not so great but are good out of focus you could use MakeHuman it is free and it integrates into blender comes with clothes and hair. Just do you modeling and rendering in Blender and use Make Human your people filler.

Se commissionassi un lavoruccio credo ragionevolmente semplice (io ci ho provato con Blender e Google Sketchup ma sono ancora troppo una sega), non in esclusiva per me, quanto mi fareste spendere?

Ho bisogno che sia fatta a "simbolo del Tao" (o Ying/Yang se vi suona più familiare) con le parti bianca e nera che siano in effetti due prop distinti, una semplice cornicetta dal profilo a settore di cerchio in basso a tenerla insieme (un prop distinto anche lei) e varie "material zone" per le zone bianca e nera, i cerchietti interni (facciamo separabili anche quelli, quindi in pratica dei cilindrini?), i lati e la cornice.

L'uso ideale, oltre che per figure in stile orientale, sarebbe come stand per coppie lui/lei, buono/cattivo, umano/tecno e cose del genere, quindi secondo me potrebbe diventare un articolo tutto sommato vendibile sullo store.

Nota: - ho il portafoglio in arranco, quindi se il prezzo è un po' consistente (a meno che non accettiate pagamenti rateali ) si tratterà di un lavoro da far partire da qui a un po' di tempo.

Aspetto fiduciosa; dài, che avete tanta voglia di offrire ai nostri Daz-paciugamenti un piedistallo nuovo...
