  • Daz Studio 5 preview release is delayed and that's good news.

    DAZ_Rawb said:

The title of this thread might be a little bit confusing, so let me start with the first half:

The Daz Studio 5 preview release is being delayed. The Studio dev team has worked really hard and gotten it to the point where we were getting ready to go through all the build and release procedures / ceremonies / interpretive dances necessary to get it distributed out to you but we are going to wait on that. This pre-release essentially would have been a version of Daz Studio 4.15 missing a bunch of features and running on a newer set of core libraries. The new big thing that it could do would be to run on the latest version of MacOS. So if we had a version of Daz Studio 4.15 that had all the features and compatibility and worked on the latest version of MacOS it wouldn't make sense to release this very early preview correct?

Well, the Studio team has also been working with some Apple engineers to see if there was a way to get Daz Studio 4.15 working on the latest MacOS and after a number of false-starts we finally had success. The latest DIM has those changes in it, so it should be able to run on the latest MacOS (and continue to work great on Windows). As for Daz Studio? Check out the new public beta (4.15.0.25) that just launched. This beta has some stability fixes in it as well, so it's not just a win for the MacOS folks. The beta cycle will likely be pretty fast so please give it a run through when you see it out in the wild.

Next month will mark a year since the delay of the preview (which would have given Mac users the ability to finally use Filament), any closer to a possible beta release of DAZ Studio 5.0?

  • OT a little -- NEW FREE program over at Pilgway

Now it's a new day, I'm just popping in again.

Thanks Catherine for the advice and for the appreciation of the images.  3d printing is fun and I have made loads of items from just one reel of filament so far.  I have a project in mind and am trying different ways to get the robes and hair styles I need.  I've tried sculpting and building on various figures for practice but eventually will need to make primitive base figures of my own and start over for full ownership.

I need also to make better use of layers so that a home-made sculpted hairstyle, for example, could be exported on its own.  Maybe it would be less complex to print a figure with no hair and then add the wig!

I tried exporting of the draped clothes only to stl (seen in the black and white images I posted) but the 3d Print version gave me an 'out of  memory' message.  Of course, the full program would probably cope because the work of reducing the item to 40k isn't being done.

Wendy, your info about exporting is helpful to me, thanks.  Now where can I get a nice chocolate Easter Bunny...

Marble, Glad I helped a little.  Obviously there are other free sculpting applications you might try.  I like the idea of learning to create one-off items that would fit into a scene - a rock to sit on or a top-hat or whatever.  Sculpting is a fun way to try these things out.

  • Strange issue with DAZ

Those relate to OpenGL, used by the Viewport Drawstyles except Iray and Filament.

What are your system sepcifications, and what GPU (video card) driver version do you have? You might also check the end of the log after an attempt to render - you can open it without restarting Daz Studio by pasting this into a file browser address bar

  • Recommendations for UltraScenery Workflow ? DS slows to a crawl when I use it

You can do some stuff using the Filament engine.  It's better than texture-shaded as far as lighting previews, and faster than Iray.  You can also use interactive previews, rather than photoreal for most things.  There's no getting around tone-mapping in Iray photoreal if you don't do postwork.  The obvious option is to render to 32-bit canvases, with separate canvases for environment lighting and each light source or groups of light sources, and then fixing everything in post.  Creating a normal canvas can also help lighting direction, etc.  It's a bit advanced, but powerful.  Once you include postwork in your process, things get a lot easier in Daz Studio.

Here's one way to use normal maps in Photoshop.

There's also the option of only generating what's in the camera frame.  You can sort of feel your way around and decide on a place for your characters with a full set, and then regenerate using the camera frame option for fine-tuning.  You may have to add some props out-of-frame to create some extra shadows, but those don't have to be high-rez and even billboards can do the trick.

For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure a 15k system would choke on large, fully rendered scenes, as well.

PS: there are a few threads in Commercial with bunches of tips on using Ultrascenery.  Here's the latest, I think:

  • Gtx and Rtx possible?

Maybe he's asking if there are settings for using just 3DL or Filament, instead of Iray??
Or maybe he doesn't realize he can de-select his 980Ti and just select the 3080 Ti for Iray rendering?
Sorry, I have a 3080 Ti, but I'm just getting around to rendering again, still not set up, so maybe I'm confused because it's been so long.
    .. I'll bow out.

  • DAZ Speed - Any plans on improving this?

    Some recent developments:

--Filament. Not sure how many are using it.  I'm not seeing a lot of finished renders.

--MetaMixer.  When I see Daz renders, I see far more Daz users are customizing characters with non-character specific sliders than with hybridization.  I suspect that some users think it's the best thing since sliced bread, but I have little interest.

--Volumetrics.  Of little use to me, but it's a real thing.

They are developing features.  We'd all like our particular issues and problems catered to, but my individual wants and needs won't coincide with Daz priorities much of the time.

You're quite right, developing a certain feature to add onto Daz Studio may be the greatest thing ever for some users, while unneeded and ignored by others. But working to improve the speed of Studio will benefit *ALL* users. That's why I'm glad JDavison made it the focus of this thread.

<snip> ....the solution currently used has worked well over four geenrations of figuers, but it is stressed by large product sets (Genesis 3 Female had similar, though less severe, issues towards the end of its shorter product cycle).

That's pretty much the typical life cycle of software. It starts off with certain technical decisions that made perfect sense at that time. Then as improvements are made over the years, features are added, or user expectations change, that framework gets steadily more creaky.

At some point the hard decision has to be made for a major ground-up overhaul even if it breaks a lot of backward compatibility (one of Daz's strengths) often annoying customers who have large content investments, or risk a competitor coming in and taking over. We can all think of companies who dominated a certain market and had huge mind-share, but who failed to keep up and are now just footnotes.

Bridges/converters are probably intended for a real, but nonetheless limited, fraction of the customer base.  I don't see any reason to believe that Daz plans an about-face in regards to being a content provider without its own proprietary app.  We will see a Daz Studio 5.0.

I am pretty sure I saw a comment from a DAZ person suggesting that DAZ 5 is a long way off - at least a year, maybe several. In the meantime there are issues that DAZ Studio lovers (and I guess that includes me as I play with it every day - it is the most-used toy I've ever had), issues that are soooo frustrating. The slowness of loading and closing scenes, the slowness of dForce simulations, the slowness of rendering (and I am fortunate enough to have a 3090 but I would not like to try to render a 1 minute animation), the lack of a truly functional animation toolset that is common in most other 3D applications ... the list goes on.

Filament is a half-baked solution that could perhaps be useful if DAZ had included the all the features. As it is, it is of little use. I use it for making sure my characters' feet are on the ground and not through it but little else.

No idea what MataMixer is for. My main pleasure from DAZ Studio is in creating my own characters from the morph dials. If there is anything approaching the artistic in what I do it is that.

I don't have much use for Volumetrics but I thought that it had been possible for years. Perhaps I'm wrong.

I hope I'm wrong about the potential wait for DAZ Studio 5 but slow seems to be the operative word when it comes to DAZ.

So I'm trying to use the onyx bed and bath but the scene is too dark to see in the viewport and using filament is too laggy. Even deleting the lights doesnt work.

  • HOW TO FIX THIS?

Hi. I almost answered before but you asked twice. I don't know the specific answer but I do know two things: 1) I've seen this before, and its cause depends on a lot of things. Sometimes it's an error with files getting lost and needing to be reinstalled, sometimes it's just a user setting. I thought it might be the Draw Style choice of Filament that you have selected (in the upper right corner next to the Perspective View selection if you didn't know that) but that's not it. And 2) yes, someone here will know how to fix it. Be patient  :)

Semplicemente impensabile. angry

No I'm just trying to use filament for the viewport so it doesn't have to keep trying to load Iray. rendering in iray but for setting up filament.

Filament defaut tone mapping is terrible and all is whitish overexposed.

Create>New Filament Draw Option Node, then select this node in the scene tab, parameters>Tone Mapping and set ISO scale to 0.1 instead of 1 and the filament display should be correct.

Got this product https://www.daz3d.com/shopping-street and it does look really good, but know you will need to do a lot of scene optimization and other tricks to render it unless you have a 3090 or better, as even my 12GB 3060 could not render this out of the box without doing a lot of optimizing..

Is there a quality difference between GPU and CPU rendering or is it just speed?
I have a 1050 so I work in fillament and my renders are usually just CPU based, would that be a problem for this set to render at all or will it just take more time?

That is something that I could not say as don't use filament, but if using only CPU for rendering I think that then the only limiting factor, would probably be how much ram you have in your system..
