DAZ, you need more servers!

OMG... I have a pretty fast connection but after my purchase yesterday morning DIM just keeps failing and failing and failing.  Not good DAZ.  I've found that if I do ONE download at a time I get somewhere, it's something at least.  I guess....

Daz_Peeps have said in other threads that the way the servers have been getting hammered is totally unprecendented. They are working on it.

Thanks Cho.  My question is why didn't they have this worked out BEFORE this huge change?  You know, better safe than sorry!   I mean they now have a full web store, forums, DIM and now CONNECT inline store in DAZ Studio.  Makes no sense to me why they wouldn't have put extra servers up before putting this new bit live on TOP of the 4.9 release.

Maybe I should have hilighted the word Unprecedented.

They simply were not expacting the traffic that there has been. DIM and Connect are actual on different servers.

Ah, well hopefully they get this resolved and NEXT time take better precautions!  wink

The way most big companies handle a big patch (or required new version) is to have their many clients start DLing it in advance of it actually going live . . .

My understanding is that they had extra capacity on line for when 4.9 went live, but the traffic was much greater than they had expected.

What with all the negativity in a couple of the other threads and the "I won't do 4.9" - it looks like the silent majority has spoken. And pounded the servers into dust at the same time. :-)

Or DIM might be fading into the mists of time. wink  Just kidding.  DIM abruptly stopped working for me awhile back, so I'm not a fan.

The 49%-off-everything-plus-49%-more-off-many-things sale might have something to do with it. Even the people who are saying they'll leave are probably taking the opportunity to get the things they really want before everything goes to hell.

It's probably people downloading all their zips believing they may be encypted soon. DAZ has however promised that content that has already been purchased will remain being available for download unencrypted.

Maybe some are also grabbing and downloading older stuff in the store expecting that to be encrypted soon also (don't know if that's the case).

I've noticed DIM is much slower these days.

I wonder if they moved servers over to connect, sacrificing DIM?

Heh, DAZ says many things these days.  I'm planning on downloading all of my zips asap.

I don't think they legally can change a product you've already purchased that way, without your permission.

I'm not to sure that the DIM slowdown has anything to do with people in a rush to upgrade to 4.9. I have been having trouble for weeks downloading my purchases. What I have always done is come home from work start downloading my purchases, take a shower and when I get back to my computer, everything is done. But recently, when I get back to my computer, I find that many items have failed and worse yet, my computer is frozen.  If I sit there and download one by one it usually works. I have been basically downloading zip files since at least the Christmas sales.

Hmmm, me too,  I have had a few slowdowns but it was sporadic. I just attributed it to higher volume of traffic. I did have several fails, which was unusual, for the past two weeks.

Maybe more people than ever before are downloading this new version. Or maybe 4.9 requires a lot more host-to-server communications than 4.8 and prior did.

Well I did get my stuff downloaded yesterday ONE product at a time.  Took well over an hour to download all the purchases.  Now I've got a new dilemma ... my purchase was well over the amount needed to get Connect freebies.  I got Lynsey.  I was expecting her to automatically downloaded via Connect in DAZ Studio.  Instead I found her via a Search in the All tab, which includes NON purchased items.  She didn't show up in the Pending and Available tabs but not in the Installed tab so I'm a bit confused how this new thing works.  I'm scared to click the install button as I don't want to be charged for her............ weird system.  I'm sure it will all be made clear as time goes on.............

There's also the whole business of Connect automagically downloading and installing things you've already installed through DIM — unless you know the secret handshake to make Connect do a local migrate instead. I've noticed a few comments in various threads from people who didn't realise at first what Connect was doing.

Right.  I doubt that the introduction of DRM has made everyone jump up and say "well I was on the fence before but I'm switching to DAZ studio! Pushing download now!".  More likely that a comparable number (or somewhat fewer due to skepticism) of upgrades occured but the new software has to phone home way more. Personally, I don't like software that communicates to other servers without my direct permission and without my knowing what it's sending so that's a red flag to me.

DS4.9 doesn't phone home and doesn't communicate with with Daz unless you log in, in which case all it sends to Daz is your userID and password, and the names of products that you requested to be downloaded (or any search if you use the Store tab).

The day 4.9 was released, although I was only downloading a handfull of small stuff, DIM was incredibly slow.  Next day, I downloaded 4.9 and some other stuff and it was probably the fastest I've ever downloaded anything from daz.  Maybe I'm just lucky.

All doesn't show things you haven't purchased. Daz Connect does not automatically install products. Lynsey should show up in your Available tab and, of course, your All tab. Find her in either tab and right click and select Install. Then she will show up in Pending. You sill see her gradually change from gray icon to colored icon. After install finishes, you will find her in the Installed tab and the All tab. Remember that All puts all the Installed products at the top followed by products you own but haven't installed.

Yea, figured that out and Spooky also commented in another thread about this.  So thanks barbult!  :-)
