Using DS 4.9 skin textures in 4.8?

Even if I was a huge fan of 4.9 I really do not have enough hard drive space to make the switch right now, so I am wondering if there is a quick way to adjust skin textures designed for 4.9 to look correct in 4.8?

    I'm interested in this too.

what did they do now? Do I want to update or site tight on 4.8 until ver5 gets some stability after release?

I'm not sure on all of the details, but there is a bug in the photeorealstic rendering method in the version of Iray in 4.8 that is fixed in 4.9 that required a texture tweak.

The differences in 4.9 and 4.8 don't have anything to do with "textures" per se, but the materials.  You can always adjust the materials to your liking.

I would say: save a materials preset that you like, apply that with a Ctrl-Click and tell it to ignore the textures so it retains everything texture wise but replaces the materials with the ones you like.

I'm not positive that texture artists actually adapt the textures themselves.  That seems like an awful lot of work when  its much easier to just change the materials. Of course, I could be wrong.  But saving the materials preset you like is probably the easiest way to adapt.

Through the course of the beta, I didn't really notice that much difference in how the official materials rendered.  But... I almost never use the official materials.

Thanks, you are right, it is probably the materials. Either way, I would like to know if there is a quick setting I can change to "undo" it (diffuse color, etc.).

Theoretically... but it depends on how much they change.  They say that it is mostly contained to Translucency, so it might be possibe to just adjust the Translucency options.  However, Translucency and the Volume (the thin walled options) are directly related.  It remains to be seen if they decide that the changes in Translucency result in them making changes to these settings as well.

Yep. From the 4.9 docs onlione

Daz Original products will be updated to reflect the 4.9 rendering changes, but if you encounter any products that render with a bluish tint, feel free to edit the “SSS Reflectance Tint” value to adjust the result to your liking.

It was a setting tweek not a texture tweak and if you use the 4.9 settings in 4.8 the figure may be too yellow and of course not have the fixes to how translucence works (think it was mostly a translucence issue) corrected.

It was also stated, in the stickied thread "Daz Studio 4.9 Daz Original Figure Skin Material Optimization", that we should be seeing updates to some figures and characters that include presets for both 4.8 and 4.9 Iray. Here's the exact quote:

With this change, we will be updating our Daz Original character and figure skins that were released in figure release bundles to take advantage of this improvment.  This means, over the course of the next few weeks, your Daz Original figures that were released as part of a figure release bundles will have both the original 4.8 materials and *NEW* 4.9 materials, that take advantage of the change.

There is a post somewhere, (too bad it isn't stickied,) with the changes needed to the 4.8 presets for use in 4.9. As I recall, there were two parameters that needed changes. One of the DAZ mods should post the information in the material optimization thread, linked above, so we can use it on other figures and characters. We will undoubtedly need to do our own tweaks to many characters that will never be updated, just as we are doing our own conversions to Iray of older figures and characters now.

Mostly they suggested a minor change to the color used in the sss reflectance tint. Not a fix I was really impressed with to be honest. However, I have been very pleased with the updated characters. I'm not saying I might not make some adjustments to surfaces at times (it is a compulsion with me really) but I'm comfortable using V7 and a couple of others (have not tried them all yet) as they load.
