What will 4.9 do to a 4.6 version?

I asked in one of the other threads, its buried, can't find it, no clue if it was answered.

I did not DL 4.8 for various reasons, one being the destruction of my content format.

That's obvious.  Will it wreak the same havoc as 4.8 is my question.

4.9 is playing nice with 4.8.  Will it play nice with 4.6?

You're doing a version jump. Perhaps, but the further you get with the generations, the more problems you'll have.

I'm not clear on what problem you had with 4.8?  Are you talking about the 4.9 general release or the 4.9 beta?

I didn't download 4.8.  I was in hospital for a while, and then I noticed people complaining that it wiped custom content library folders and had issues with smart content.

I see comments now that 4.9 general is migrating that custom content fine.  My question is, will it migrate the same from 4.6.

You are going to need to clarify what you mean by custom content.

    Forget it.

Custom categories.  Migrating products to custom folders instead of using the default folders.

But never mind.  I'm tired of explaining a simple question about a well known issue with 4.8

Forgive the hell out of me that I didn't "phrase" it perfectly.

    Hey Teofa!

Here's my two cents (and that's about what it's worth) I discovered that when 4.9 is installed, it is with the 4.8 folder. So when I do something like a Category in 4.8, it changes in 4.9. The problem that I see (and I'm not technical) is that the 4.6 and 4.9 don't share functions/setup like 4.8 and 4.9 do. If 4.9 replaces the 4.6, I wouldn't assume they'd play perfectly together, if it were me. If you have a copy of 4.6 and your files backed up somewhere so that 4.9 can't get to them (lol) then I guess you'd just have to try it to see. A lot of rambling to say play it safe.

Thank you Novica.  This is what I suspect.  I certainly plan to isolate my 4.6 install.

I don't want to install 4.9 and spend hours finding products that are no longer where I put them.

I believe the problems you are referring to were related to the Valentina to PostSQL CMS converstion. If you are still running the Valentina  CMS you will need to convert to PostSQL as part of the migration to 4.9, since 4.9 does not support the Valentina CMS anymore.

I have a lot of custom categories that I have created, and I did the migration without any difficult when the PostSQL CMS first came out.  In my experience the PostSQL CMS has been faster and more stable than the Valentina CMS. If you have created custom categories, be sure to back up your user data before doing the conversion. If the conversion fails for some reasons you should still be able to reload all the meta data for DAZ products including your user meta data with custom categories.

How do I backup my User Data in Daz Studio?"

This is correct. The biggest issue you may run into is if your Valentina database is corrupt which can make the conversion problematic, or outright fail. Unfortunately a corrupt database with Valentina, is fairly common (The big reason we went to PostgreSQL.) and while you may not see it now, if it is corrupt, it will just get worse over time and eventually fail and lose the database.

You do have to do the migration to PostgreSQL before installing DS 4.9 as 4.9 doesn't understand the Valentina Database.

Part of (possibly most) the problems with the 4.6 to 4.8 update and content were related to the Valentina/Postgre switchover...and not making sure that the user data was backup.  Something I learned a long time ago with games...before any patch/upgrade back up the user data (saves).

My question is, what will happen to my installed content if I install DS4.9?

Right now I am using DS4.8 but have still some of my installed content under Poser Formats Studio 3 back from DS3 times. I also have some content under My Library (DAZ and Poser) and of course the new stuff under My DAZ3D Libary (Poser Formats and DAZ) So what will happen to this installed content?

Nothing. It will be there and will work as usual.
