ISO a Shawl

Not a poncho or a cape or a scarf, but a shawl worn around the shoulders. I've been looking for ages, and have attempted to fake it with clothing items that were *close*, and also attempted to make one using dynamic items (don't get me started on that frustration), but I'd really love it if a PA would make a nice thick, good quality shawl (like the photo attached, for G2 and G3) with lots of morphs, or if one already exists, please point me to it! Thanks.

Dynamics can be frustrating. Are you a Poser or Studio user? If you are Studio, do you have the Dynamic Clothing Control plug-in?

  • Studio. And yep, I've got the plug-in. wink I can approximate a decent drape (see attached), but not without lots of time/effort. It would be hugely time-saving if a conforming item were available...

It is possible to convert dynamic items into conforming ones by drapping whilst the character is in the zero pose, and then using the Transfer Utility to rig the item as a conforming one. You would then use as a conforming item for poses where that works well, or in situations where the wearing character is in the background and so a poor drape is less noticable. In situations where a dynamic drape is needed then you do so dynamically as before.

I should add, however, this works better with closer fitting items, than something like a cloak or a shawl.

If you don't plan on changing the upper body/arms posing drastically, I think you'd probably get the best looking shawl by draping one using wind directions and varying the gravity, then freezing the simulation and keeping your draped shawl as a prop. You could use a smoothing modifier to help adjust it if you alter the pose.

I can try doing a draped prop and share it with you as a scene file, but I'd need to know what dymanic items you have for it to work. I have:

Thanks, Havos. I've never experimented with the Transfer Utility, but maybe now is the time to give it a shot.

Wow, Tim. You just reminded me why I love this forum. So many people ready and willing to go above and beyond to help out.

Thing is, I *do* intend to produce some rather drastic upper body/arm/hand posing...that's actually the main reason I started this thread. One of my characters is wearing a "thick shawl" out in the cold (material thickness is another reason dynamic cloth is unsuitable), and she's holding the edges of it. (Honestly, it's often a challenge, to use the term lightly, to match the scenes in my books with existing 3D products.) However, you and Havos have given me an idea, and now I'm off to see if I can make what I need. Thanks SO much!
