Does using sun sky only increase iray render times?

So I recently starting messing around with the sun sky in the render settings. I like how using sun sky only lights one of my renders. I've noticed however that the render speed has slowed majorly in comparison to using spotlights etc. Is this normal or is my computer having a mental breakdown?

    Did you test the exact same scene using the different approaches? Then you'd know for sure. And you don't have to render the entire thing, you could check benchmarks several places and if the trend were to continue, you'd know.

    The way I understand it sun/sky should be as fast as HDRI for external scenes. As the only lighting for interiors it is likely going to be much slower than if you also added some additional interior lighting.
