Okay, how do you turn things off in Iray?

All right. I've got a scene to build and I need some fingerless gloves. Well fine. G3M has a couple of outfits that include fingerless gloves.

They have studs. I don't need studs. I'm going to be applying shaders. And yes, I find that I can apply a 3DL shader and then simply turn the studs off.

But the original gloves have Iray materiials, and eventually I'm going to want to turn off a matt zone when I'm working in Iray. I can't find an opacity setting to turn anything off from in the lists of iray settings. How do you turn off a matt zone in Iray?

  • Same as with 3Delight. In Iray surface settings scroll all they way to near the bottom of the surface settings and there should be opacity section. It's near the tiling, displacement and such.

One caveat on that is if the item is using refraction: glass, liquids, etc. You'll need to set Refraction Weight to zero to completely hide the material.

You can also set Cutout Opacity to zero

As I understand it (and I don't work with Iray much) Cutout Opacity in Iray is the equivalent to "normal" opacity in 3DL.  I have noticed that when I convert a surface using Iray Uber, Cutout Opacity is where any Opacity Maps end up.

Okay, thanks. I saw that and had no idea what it was talking about. Should do for when I want to turn something off and apply a 3DL shader to something else, assuming that there aren't 3DL materials available.

Which is something that I'm going to need to get into the habit of checking.

If setting Cutout Opacity to zero still shows a faint shadow, add a black jpg to the channel. It can be any size, as long as it's full black.

I have a preset with a black jpg specifically for cutout, as I've occasionally had issues in the past with no jpg.

Yeah, I have some jpgs of flat white, gray, and pure black. Not very big, but I find them useful for lots of stuff (like environmental maps when I want to have a simple background fill)
