  The presets are INVALUABLE.

  While I tweaked the textures a bunch, the following was a lightly tweaked preset 'millenium cat - short hair' preset (I reduced the length a little) and a out-of-the-box Classic Canines.

  Mind you, texture matters, but without a preset to work with the chance of me coming up with that nice furry look is very close to hahahahano.

  Yes, it is.  I used the export to fiber hair feature on the full product (it's not in the free player).
