Clothing & Prop creation?

Hi,

It's a new year, next year is 2016. I know many inquire about this but what are some of the most simple and easy to use software that let's you create clothing and props for DAZ figures?

I use ZBrush 4R7 but I have not mastered it yet.

Any other suggestions?

Thnx

I wouldn't really call it 'easy to use' -- it has a rather steep learning curve -- but once you get used to it, Blender is one of the best applications for 3-D modeling around!  From constructing the geometry, to UV-mapping, to texturing, even animation, Blender can do it all.

Hexagon. Everybody knows I'm going to jump in here and say Hexagon! Yes it has some quirks, they all do. It can do somethings the other programs can't and it can't do somethings the other programs can. However, it is inexpensive and has a BRIDGE to D/S which is priceless at times. So for modeling for D/S it's one for the toolbox IMHO.

Personally, I like Carrara for making props (clothing, probably not, I have no idea).

It's SIGNIFICANTLY easier to understand and use than most other apps, you can get it reasonably cheap on frequent sales, and you have a number of ways to model things.

Depends on what works for you, Most modeling apps do the same things, just depends on how the UI works for you. best thing to do is try as many as you can till you find thwe one that works best for you and then dig in and figure out the DS specific workflow. try the free ones first (blender, wings) then the inexpensive (hexagon, carrara) and then the trials/demos of the higher end software like Lightwave, Maya, 3DSmax, Zbrush, MODO or C4D

    I wouldn't recommend Wings.

I tried it several years ago, to model a demon tail (the only ones I could find on the 'net looked like they were part of a Halloween costume!), and found the UI to be cumbersome, counter-intuitive, with inconsistent mouse support, and just generally, seriously under-powered.  I ended up completing the project in Blender, and I never looked back.

I have both Hexagon and Cararra, but they never really 'caught on' with me; don't really know why, I just never felt comfortable with them.

It's exactly as FSMCDesigns said: whatever works for you.

From everything said about it, Blender seems the best choice (free, lots of features). The problem is a massive investment of time to learn how to use the thing.

I totally believe I'd really like Blender if I learned to use it, but I don't have that kind of time or endurance to go through weeks of training to do anything.

  • I find Carrara easiest too for vertex modeling,  but mostly because Hexagon crashes and freezes too much for me, if it did not I would indeed use it as it has more tools.

That said a former Hex and Wings3D user I know now loves Blender as it makes more sense to her, different UI fit diff folks.

I use marvelous designer for clothes, it's not cheap though. I also love zbrush, especially painting textures and displacement. It really all depends on what you are trying to do, and how much you have to spend. In theory, you could get it all done with zbrush, it is a badass program. Keeps getting better and better, and the free upgrades have paid for the program many times over for me already.
