Creating a render farm
in The Commons
Over the years, I have heard about creating a "Render Farm" with multiple computers sharing the rendering. Is this a viable option for DAZ Studio? How is this done? What additional hardware do I need?
Is there a link somewhere or a book I can purchase on Amazon that contains a reasonable description of how to do it? I am not sure if I even have the technical expertise to do it.
I would appreciate any experiences from people who have done it with DAZ Studio and how much time is saved by doing it and if it is worth the effort.
Thanks in advance.

With Reality/Luxrender, this is pretty simple. You set up any number of cheap Linux boxes with Luxrender, and the master node (Windows or Mac) running Reality will let Luxrender connect to the remotes. You can use cast-off PCs, or buy some cheap multi-core, multi-socket servers. Surplus stores have old Dell and HP servers as cheap as $120. I have this set up with a Dell PE 1950 I got cheap. It has 8 cores. It basically doubles the number of threads I can run in Luxrender. It does mean you need to be somewhat familiar with Linux.
For 3Delight renders, I believe you can do this with the standalone version of 3Delight loaded on the other machines. I have not attempted this. There was a thread somewhere on this subject. Google is your friend.
