Insights Please: Designing my own Character

I'm doing this for my own amusement. I decided to try and design a DAZ Studio "representation" of myself.

I started with the Genesis 8.1 "plain vanilla" male. Got some decent results, but couldn't get the "aged details" I wanted.

I switched to Michael 8, and got better results. I used Floyd 8's skin textures.

But it appears I need to get Michael 8 HD to get the best results. That will be on my list for next month.

Now what about the Genesis 8.1 characters? Do they have "HD" versions as well? Or do they need them for greater detail?

    ...pretty good likeness..

G8.1 uses a different UV map structure than G1 - G8 so you are pretty much limited to using 8.1 skins. Also this generation can include hieratical materials (skin and hair) as well which are exclusive to 8.1 and can interfere wit using otter resources such as skin and hair shaders.

There are the Aging Morphs for Genesis 8 Males by Zev0 that you may want to look at,  Which is currently on sale There is also a bundle that includes the morphs for G8F (which is also on sale).

There is also SF People That You Meet Character Shapes which van be used to create head and body shapes for characters you would see in real life rather than supermodels, hunks, and fantasy characters.  It is also on sale

Except what you're saying here is wrong (emphasis mine): you can apply most Genesis 3 and Genesis 8 skins on Genesis 8.1 by default.

Only characters using a special UV maps like Genesis 3 Core Figures won't work without either remapping their textures to the default UV of their base figure or using a product providing their UV maps for Genesis 8, like this one or this one, but if you have them, you can apply a Core figure H.mats (let's say Victoria 7) on a Genesis 8.1 figure:

..I've had to use  the development figure to transfer skins.

    Thanks for your replies.

I first noticed a large amount of Senior figures with Genesis 8. I just love Mabel, Floyd, etc. My friends really like it when I show them funny pictures with those characters.

I have, however, thought that it would be nice to have some characters that more closely resemble my friends. I'm talking just a bit closer to reality.

Mabel and some of the other characters are just a bit over the top in some instances.

I figured it would be an easier start to attempt a 3D representation of myself. Michael 8 provides a great foundation.

Then I noticed all the aged morphs that were only available for Michael 8 HD. Until now I pretty much only got the HD version if it was available as part of a bundle that I bought. So now Michael 8 HD is on my wish list for next month.

The People that you meet product looks good.

I just reminded myself that I have Ebeneezer Scrooge 8.1. That allows me to have a nice texture set to use for a future conversion of a Genesis Male 8.1.

But that project probably will be halted for a bit.

I have the aged morphs packages, but they don't appear to have the dramatic look I wanted. That might be because I was using them on the "default" Genesis 8.1 male, etc.

...there is one way to get realistic faces of real people, however it is a bit pricey.

    https://www.daz3d.com/face-transfer-unlimited

With a "perfect storm" of discounts I was able to get it for under10 USD - Mad Artists category (60%  discount), Gold star (30% discount), and there was 30% discount coupon for it being on my wishlist.  It is possible this combo of discounts (or maybe a dfferent/better one) will happen again at or near this sale's end.
