My Experiments converting my 2D images to 3D

kenmokenmo Posts: 1,123

I always like the fantasy tree figure (ent) I created in Guardian of the Woods using Photoshop.

I often thought I would like to model it in 3D Coat, but the task seemed a little too daunting for me.

Here is the base painting of the tree figure before posing renders of DAZ animals around it, adding Corel Painter to add brush strokes.

I recently came across various Youtube videos and tutorials on online apps that turns a 2D image into a 3D model.

So I gave it a try...

Using various free online image to 3D on Huggingface, I decided on Sparc3D as the best. BUT it does not generate a texture. I will use 3DCoat to texture. The poly count is way too high to use in a DAZ or Vue render.

I tried to use the auto retopo feature in 3D Coat but it failed every time. I also tried "Quad Remesher" commercial plug in for Blender and it also failed.

So I used Blender to decimate the figure. I had also tried 3D Coat to export as decimated but found Blender did a much better job at decimating and retaining detail.

I also tried baking a  UV Mapped 3D Coat decimated model and the original hipoly with normal maps. But the detail was not as clean as the Blender decimated model with no normal maps.

In Blender 5, in EDIT mode to decimate I selected MESH->CLEAN-UP->DECIMATE GEOMETRY and entered .1 for decimate amount. This is what Chipp Walters recommended (creator of Kit Ops and other excellent addons for Blender in a Youtube video).

The image is of the deimated model.

I used Blender addon Instant Clean to check and repair non-maifold, loose polys or verts, etc. I found it work better  on this model then Blenders  3D Print ToolBox

I like it a lot. Sell it in the DAZ Store when you're done.

Thanks for the info, I've been using 3D Print Toolbox but I'll give Instant Clean a try.

It often seems that way, but there's so very many threads and so many distractions these days outside of the forums that you shouldn't be disheartened. Many of us do enjoy seeing this type of creativity, even we don't always take the time to comment.

It's also very annoying that the forum view no longer shows how many people have viewed a thread recently, to a hundred people may have stopped and viewed your thread but it only reports one view.

That is very interesting. Thanks for posting.

    On Gumroad it is listed, that it support Blender 2.93, 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5

Do you know, if it support Blender 5.x series?

I have it installed on Blender 5 but I seem to have better luck with Instant Clean on this tree figure.

    Thanks.

I am asking about Instant Clean in Blender 5.

  • kenmokenmo Posts: 1,123

As I said I have better luck with Instant Clean on my figure. I am using Blender 5.0. So YES , Instant Clean works fine for me in Blender 5.0.

    Thanks for the confirmation.

I thought I would try making another 3D model from one of my 2D illustrations."The Traveller". It is an earlier image, I liked the snail character but not the overall image.

I cut the snail from the image and saved as an transparent PNG.

After an initial run in a free image to 3D with the rider included, the man was included as being a part of the unicorn and not a rider in the 3D model. So I removed the rider from the image.

This time I thought I would retopo with the commercial Blender add-on, "Quad Remesher"  since it failed on the previous TREE ENT figure.

However on this snail it did not struggle at all.

I was  a little shy posting another example as the previous attempt seemed to go over like a lead ballon.

It is not my intent to waste waste web space if there is no interest in topics like this.

Comments and tips would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers
