Fatal Error 4.24 With Windows Update

IceDragonArtIceDragonArt Posts: 12,865

DAZStudio.exe caused ACCESS_VIOLATION in module "C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4\plugins\dzirayrenderer.dll" at 0033:000000005E825A29, getPluginDefinition()+276089 byte(s)

Windows 11 did an update last night and this morning 4.24 is crashing on start up.  The alpha version still works just fine.  I uninstalled the update, didn't help.  4.10 still works as well

Have you tried to reinstall 4.24?

I have no idea why Windows upgrade could effect that.

Might have done somethign to the nVidia driver - I know having donea  clean Windows 10>Windows 11 install on the old system I had to use DDU to get the nVidia drivers updated to something useful as my first attempt left debris that caused issues.

Reinstalling did not fix the problem

Then as Richard said, update you GPU drivers. Windows might have messed witth them.

Also did not work.  I had the latest version ( I literally just built this machine last month).  I rolled back the driver, didn't help, re installed the latest driver, also didn't work

Did you reinstall Win11?  That would likely re-installs latest, via auto-download to get you up-to-date, as windows is fond of (it's their computer - not yours).

You should have a system restore from before your update?  But that may not work with reinstall (never tried that).

That restores everything the way it was before.  Works 100% of the time over the years, but am not a user of Win11.  System Restore is very common and generally easy to use.  Likely Downside going forward is win11 is updating something it shouldn't. Meaning until you find what it is updating you would have to keep Windows updates on hold until you find out what it's changing, or keep a restore point (kept for <30 days another stupid WinOS development - which they are doing ad nauseum these days).

Should also mention that someone posted here not too long algo that current OctaneRender supports 5*** series cards.  And that would be for older  4,24.*.*, which means you would have to get working again.

    https://home.otoy.com/render/octane-render/purchase/

But means a monthly-sub and redoing your textures.  But given the long uncertainty over scripts and DAZ 2025 and full implentation, it may be a consideration.  It is REALLY abysmal this whole situation of IRAY-DAZweddedToIray.  Just had to laugh that OTOY's plugin for DAZ works (havn't seen any posts to contrary).

Yeah I'm not uninstalling and reinstalling windows 11 I literally just put this machine together a month ago.  Its not critical, I have 4.10 installed and it works just fine for using my scripts etc.  And I render in the alpha so its still doable.  I loathe microsoft but until someone comes up with something else thats really viable, I guess we are stuck with it. It screwed up my GOG installer as well but undoing the update fixed that.  The error in daz clearly indicates its an iray issue and seems to only be affecting 4.24

did you try running it in compatibility mode?

a long shot but I had to do that for D|S2.8 (yes, you read that right, was feeling nostalgic)

Well that's good if you're happy with 4.10 working :)
Loath is an apt word these days.

I keep watching Linux as a dual boot option. Too much work yet for DAZ (with DAZ still supporting MACs but not Linux officially) but for some other things Linux has come a long ways exponentially in last few years.

FYI: winOS, including 11, auto-makes a 'system restore'.  You should definately have one from before the windows update.
Only very aggressive AVs may require you to restore from boot-up. Most of times just works in windows (have read that system restore works as before in Win11 too, other than kept for shorter timepsans now - so don't leave for too long if remotely interested).

And importantly, Windows has an option to toggle on or off 'the update all your drivers' as well when it does updates (or Win10 did - so would expect same for Win11).
Have mine turned off forever.  So for example, i updated Nvida drivers when i wanted to.
Suspect this is why your IRAY is borked for 4.24. (and GOG, and so on)

    Hi Wendy!
Yeah good ole compat mode.  Been awesome for a few things.
Probs be worth a try, as it doesn't even take but a minute.
Given 4.10 works, likely not. But who knows with Windows and its INSISTENCE that everything be current (ignoring some people have tried and true software that they don't need broken by needless updates).
    Happy 3D'ing!

I will look for that.  And I will definitely consider the system restore

Okay so I am unable to uninstall the recent update.  I also do not seem to have a restore point.  My only option seems to be to reset this pc.  It says it will save all of my files but all of my apps will be deleted.  Does that mean I am going to have to reinstall Daz again?

I'm with Win11 + latest update + latest Nvida NSD driver 591.74... but found no issue ~~

Before going for resetting you PC, it's really worth trying DDU as Richard suggested. It ever helped me twice. In some cases, rolling back to older driver or simply re-installing driver doesn't really help.

100% uninstall the driver as well as clean the driver residuals by using DDU firstly (with Windows Safe Mode...), then install the latest NSD driver (studio driver) ~

rightclick the exe file and select the option

I doubt it will be helpful though, a bit of a longshot

sadly I know another person on Facebook who can no longer rin DAZ studio either and spent a fortune at a computer repair place to no avail, it just wom't

I myself cannot run PostGreSql on mine so no smart content

tried all the Windows permissions and Firewall whitelisting suggestions to no avail

Windows security just will not allow it to run

What is DDU?  Sorry, I know that's probably something I know but I am drawing a blank. And how do I get rid of the residuals?

  • Richard HaseltineRichard Haseltine Posts: 108,644

DDU is a tool that can be used to make sure a balky driver is completely uninstalled before trying to reinstal. https://www.techpowerup.com/download/display-driver-uninstaller-ddu/

Have you run the system file checker to see if there are any corrupt system files?

sfc /scannow in an elevated prompt will check and try to repair them, if any.

  • The NVIDIA driver package has an option to do a "Clean Installation" when you run it.  I'd check that box before I go running third party tools to nuke it.

Hmm, this made me remember that I was working on my Windows 11 computer, after that OS update and while I was doing metadata checks and looking at products, only bringing a few hairs into the view screen for a better look, when D|S crashed twice yesterday.

Prior to that update I had no issues with the latest Nvidia update to my RTX 4090 card and what it was working on.

I had assumed those crashes were to just doing too much and stressing the computer and needing to reboot more often. Now I wonder.

I did a Google search "Does 2026-01 Update (KB5078127) (26200.7628) cause crashes" and ran into Microsoft saying to uninstall it if it is causing problems until they can release an update to fix that problem. I am leary of that. Might live with it till the fix comes in.

M$ updates over the six months have caused a lot of issues, including bricking some types of SSDs, this update was meant to fix issues caused by the previous update, instead it's made things worse.

Best thing you can do is delay updates, you can do that for upto 5 weeks at a time, that way you can check online to see if it's bricked anything before allowing it to update.

Thanks  I will look for that when I am ready to do it.  Right now I am running ds4.10 and the Alpha.  I tried uninstalling the update to windows and it won't let me.  I will be working on the drivers at a later date because I work a second job during tax season helping my sister in law do taxes.  4.10 works just fine so I can run my scripts there and render in Alpha if need be.
