Holy Crud what the hockysticks with GPU prices!?

I have never bought a computer component that increased in value in the history of anything I ever bought. My lowly 3060 is nearly twice what I paid for it years ago.
I suspect the byproduct of this will hurt 3d modeling and gaming, which is something else computers can be used for occasionally, but hopefully we don't get clobbered. New build will have to wait, but who knows how long. Just techno-venting.

Thanks to AI, GPUs and RAM both are getting prohibitively expensive.  Nvidia has already stated they're dropping Video Card production 30-40%, and I've heard they're focusing remaining production on the 3060.  AI has sounded the toll for gaming and 3D in general.

And it will continue as long as we allow Nvidia to maintain it's monopolization of AI, crytomining and 3D development. Hopefully AMD/ATI, Intel and other gpu manufacturers will develop a technology to rival Nvidia's or perhaps an opensource solution.

How does AMD's Pro Render compare to Iray?

There are free plugins available, including Blender.

To wag the other tail, I'm not surprised that something stopped the headlong rush of gaming tools to ridiculous speeds & resolution.indecision  Gamers wouldn't be happy even if the gun shot BEFORE the villian appeared, yet still splattered blood.  The RTX 3060 was/is a good product for tourist users.  The 12GB version even moreso.  The professionals can nurture their need for heaftier beasts, but tourist 3Ders and Gamers are probably just stroking their ego on multi thousand dollar sub-parts.indecision  For myself, I loved my abacus.blush

I dusted off my 3060 the other day and was surprised at its speed. I have a 4080 now

Global memory supply shortage is an ongoing period of supply constraints and rapid price escalation in the semiconductor memory market, particularly affecting DRAM and NAND flash memory.

GPU prices set to rise amid memory shortage

I managed to sell my old low profile GTX 750 Ti and GTX1050 Ti for more than I bought them for, because I shifted them during the big silicon shortage during the pandemic.

I should probably shift my GTX 1650 and RTX 3060 now, to take advantage of the new shortage.

I don't even want to say how much I just spent on putting together a new render and gaming pc.  But, I shouldn't have to do it again for a very long time, at which point, I will be too old to use it anyway.  I am super happy with the performance increase over my old one.

...wait until you see your power bill.

I'm considering going back to 3DL as I have a number of enhancements that make its render quality come close to Iray. I will lave to stay with 4.24 but that's fine

Although I abhor the shameless theft of artists' works by AI companies, I can't stop using it.

Just like in my country, people complain about rising housing prices every year, but everyone wants to get rich by investing in real estate.

It will continue to grow in the coming years, as long as people continue to pay to use it.

I'm on a laptop with a 2060 so would love to do more in 3DL if I can (will also be staying in 4.24 for that reason). Could you maybe share what enhancements you're using, or point me to a thread where this is discussed? Cheers!

Closing the thread as  it is, perhaps unsurrpisingly, proving to be a lightning rod for accusations and attacks (now removed, along with their replies).
