Best way to save an actor (character)?

Hi,

Technically, I'm not a newbie but with my question, I feel I may as well be :)

I like to create all of my chracters as actors and save them to easily load up the next time.  The basic actor will be the 'naked' character but with hair and in the case of the males, with body hair as well.  Then I will have different versions of the same actor but clothed... think Malibu Barbie and Malibu Ken.  I have been saving these actors as scenes but then when I then try to add an actual scene, Daz asks me if I want to save before I replace the existing scene with the new one.  What is the best way to save a clothed/propped 'actor' to then bring into a scene with all the clothing and attachments intact?  Sorry, if this is really basic stuff.  Thank you

Try saving them as scene subsets, it should merge with the current scene when loaded.

A Persona preset can save a character with objects parented to it, e.g. clothes.

    I use Wardrobe Helper

which let's you one click to add hair, clothes, gen morphs, and more.

You can merge two scenes together: load the first one and once it's loaded, right click on the icon of the second one to chose 'Merge into scene' and that scene will be loaded on top of the scene already loaded.

For what you want to do, they are three options that are available in the current version of Daz Studio (I'm excluding scenes, even if you chose to save character as a scene, using a scene subset is a better idea).

A character preset with a post load script can likely do that, but creating one is a tedious process, very susceptible to user errors. You can use a character preset to replace a character already in a scene, while keeping what that character is wearing and their pose / expression. I don't remember if a character preset save the pose too.

A scene subset has the advantage of keeping everything in one neat package, but you can't replace a character already in a scene using a scene subset.

A Persona preset is a mix of the two: it'll save everything in one neat package like a scene subset but will also be able to replace a character already loaded like a character preset. The main limitation is that a Persona preset will replace everything parented or fitted to the character already loaded in the scene. By default, it'll replace the pose of the character a persona is replacing, but by pressing CTRL on Windows / CMD on MacOS, you'll get a pop-up menu allowing you to ask Daz Studio to keep the pose.

In your situation, I would use a Persona preset: they're more flexible than a scene preset while being as easy to save.

Personnally, for each character I'm regurlarly using, I have one Persona with them wearing nothing but their hair or items they will always have (glasses, jewelry, etc) (a character preset would likely be the better choice but it's just too tedious to create compare to a persona). That persona is the one I'll load when I'm starting a scene when I don't know what they'll be wearing and is as neutral as possible (so will as an example likely don't have any makeup applied). Then, I'll create other Personas for that character when what they are wearing in a scene is something I'll will re-use later, so this one will have clothes and makeup.

Must admit I do the same as Leana, use a scene subset. That way the character can then be loaded with all the clothing, geoshells, geografts, hair, jewelery, cameras pointing at the character, even the environment options you chose for the character.

So if I am worldbuilding and I just need to save those characters that I custom built with hair ( I don't need to save clothing or anything like that as I change that regularly) then Persona is the way to go?

    I would say so.
