CPU almost 100% usage when launching Daz 3D studio

Hi! I am new to Daz 3D.

When I launch Daz Studio 4.24, my CPU usage reaches almost 100%. I find it strange that it is uses CPU so much even when I am not doing anything.

My PC is

  • Ryzen 9 9950X3D/
  • 128 GB RAM
  • RTX 5090.

Could it be due to issues of 5090 support in 4.24 and I need to use the Alpha build? I find it strange that even without doing anything, it uses CPU so much.

  • What drawstyle are you using? I have the same CPU and GPU and don't see this behaviour.

    That's the thing - I don't use any drawstyle yet. I just launch studio and CPU immediately goes to 100%. However one observation is that I think it started when I tried once to use a Gen 9 model and tried to activate Iray. At that time CPU went 100% and I switched off back. And then I every time Daz3D started to push to 100% even if I just open studio, CPU usage goes to 90-100% even on loading screen. I will try to reinstall it, though I think I have done it once already. Another thing is that I also installed it not on C: but on a different NVMe D: drive, that I specifically allocated for 3d modelling.

    edit:

    I did the reinstall and even moved it back to C: and it did not change anything (makes sense that changing drive does not change much). It goes to 100% immediately. I wonder if I should limit CPU usage in the settings maybe? Which would be a strange thing to do but 100% throttling and it going to 80C from 40C is not good either.

  • Uninstalling and reinstalling is very rarely a fix for anything - settings and user data should, at least by default, be left alone.

    You are using a Drawstyle (unles the Viewport is closed) - the question is which one. Look at top-right of the Viewport, to the left of the long button listing the current view/camera is a little button, showing a sphere (for the OpenGL modes), a bulb filament (for Filament), or a I in a box (for Iray); click that to see which Drawstyle is being used currently. Also check the Aux Viewport, if that is open.

    Daz remembers the last drawstyle when it exits correctly. If you had Iray preview on when it exited, it will be on when you start Daz. This info is stored in <user>\AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D\Studio4\layout.dsx if that might be the issue.

    I see. I checked the DSX file I have this LRay mention in the viewports

    <Viewports>
       <View ShowAspect="yes" AutoHideViewControls="no" AutoHideViewOptions="no" FloorStyle="WireFloor" Camera="PerspectiveView" CameraCubeShown="yes" ShowAxes="no" ToolbarMode="1" ShowThirdsGuide="no" ShadeStyle="SmoothShaded" BGColor="#444444" UserStyle="DzIrayDrawStyle" Index="0" ShowPoseTool="yes"/>

    Oh! I saw that indeed Viewport was set to Lray. The moment I switched to wire bounding box, CPU usage dropped to 1%. When I switch back to LRay it goes to 100% again. I see. Guess I need new version of Daz to make it work with 5090, oh well.

    Also to be fair when I uninstall something I at least expect it to clean up the settings and stuff instead of leaving dangling files. But whatever.

  • Iray (Eye ray) rather than Lray.

    Yes, because of a chnage in the way nVidia compiles the Iray modules they cannot be made compatible with DS 4, the DS 2025 Alpha does support the 50x0 cards (and anything back to 10x0, though that oldest family is depreecated meaning at some point in the foreseeable future it will be dropped and the 20x0 cards will be the oldest supported).
