Older CPU with New GPU or Wait

Hi,

I’m currently running a rig with a 7700K CPU and a GTX 1080 GPU while using Daz Studio. I’m thinking about upgrading the GPU to a 4070 Ti Super (but not upgrading the CPU) for the extra CUDA cores to get faster rendering. Do you think upgrading the GPU alone could speed up my rendering by a factor of 3 or 4, or am I just kidding myself?

I realize the 7700K is several generations old, so I’m wondering if it might become a bottleneck when paired with a modern GPU. Since Daz Studio’s Iray renderer is primarily GPU-based, I’m hoping the CPU won’t hold things back too much—but I’d like to hear from others who’ve upgraded their GPU while keeping an older CPU.

If the scene can be fitted into the GPU (and you will gain something like 1GB simply by having an RTX GPU, instead of having to emulate the features in the GPU's memory). But how much system memory do you have? If you have less than three times the GPU memory (so 48GB) you may not have enough working space to prepare the scene for the GPU, which will slow the handling of larger scenes down as they get paged to disc (but onmce on the GPU you'd still get the speed for that stage).

Currently I have 64 GB of installed RAM, so that should definitely help with the new GPU. My only concern now is whether the older CPU might bottleneck the rendering speed.

  • If it were my decision - I would wait for DS2025 and RTX5xxx support, then upgrade everything to a "modern" CPU with an RTX5xxx card.

The CPU should not bottleneck the rendering speed once the GPU begins rendering. Plus the 4070 TI Super has twice the VRAM of the 1080 so in addition the the faster rendering you would be able to render much larger scenes in the GPU.

    Thanks all for the information

I have a limited budget right now, and I feel that upgrading the GPU would be the most affordable option until I can save up for a new CPU in about a year (hopefully).

Well, your CPU is 2 years newer than mine, and mine is still doing fine.

Has expanded RAM and upgraded to a 4070ti super GPU.

to answer my own questin, the new GPU with my older CPU is amazing, so glad I pulled the trigger.
