Question about figures holding props.

Hope this is the right place to ask. I have been looking for like a video or something on this since i started using Daz.

If I bring an object in as a prop for a character, is there a way to quickly move it to a body part (such as hand, head, neck etc).. So far i have had to position the object manually etc, so i was just wondering if there is a quick way to do it that i have just not seen yet.

Noob question, I know, but I've been discovering that there's a hell of a lot I don't know about Daz, lol, and this is 7 years in!

    Hello,

You can Right Click on the Scene tab, go to 'Parenting' and un-check 'Parent Items In Place'.

You can also un-check 'Parent Items In Place' while using the Change parent windows opened by right-clicking on the prop you want to move:

(Only Genesis 9 has a anchor on their hands, but the principal is the same for other figures)

Then parenting a prop on something will move it to, I think, the center point of that something, so if you're parenting a sword to the hand of a character, the sword will move to the hand.

You'll still have to pose that sword properly but you'll save the time to move it to the hand.

It's important to check 'Parent Items In Place' after using it, because otherwise, every time you move an object in or out a group, that item will move and most of the time, you don't want to move an object while parenting it to something.

I'll have to try that out! Thank you. I figured for such a commonly done task, there would be a more intuitive way that I just wasn't getting. lol

I'll definitedly try that out though :)

I would add, it is usually easier to do the parenting in default pose (excluding the hand).

oh absolutely. for commonly used props. they're on my figure and invisible.  But every now and again. You'll need something out of the usual rotation. And you don't realise until they're all posed up.

  • You can also Drag the Prop from Content Library into the scene and hover over the body part you want to parent it to, a small + sign will appear while you are dragging the prop into the scene and when you stop on the bodypart a popup will appear with some options.. Basically the option you are looking for is the fourth one down which will have that "Bodypart included in the option. ie : "Parent to Geneis 8 Female : Left Hand", if you are hovering over the left hand. Also you can drag more then ONE prop at a time when you do this, which for something in a hand it's not really practical, but for the head, say you want to use a Hat and scarf props...

This dragging method can be even more useful for say, setting up an empty table with props on it. So say you load a table, then drag a glass and parent it to the table, this will load it (usually) at the zero origin point of the table, so you would need to manually move the glass into place on top of the table. Now say you want to add a plate prop and a mug prop that are Both in your current content tab. Select both those props and drag them over the glass and parent them to it.  They will pop into place at the same location as the glass, with no need to readjust their Y value.  You can simply move them on the x and z to put them into place, and then in the scene tab instead of having them parented to the Glass, select them both and drag them up to the table to parent them to that. Now you have 3 options for starting points to drag and drop MORE props to the table. Just keep in mind how well this works will depend on where the zero point origin is for the prop you are dragging in, So if the props Zero is in the middle of it, instead of at an actual zero, it will be placed like that and need to be moved on the Y to give it in its proper elevation for the table top.

And starting from DS 4.23, a new option is added to Scene pane context menu called Drag and Drop Parenting and it's turned on as default.

So, if an item is already in the Scene, you can firstly turn off Parent Items in Place, select a target node or joint in Viewport or Scene pane (any node... no matter from a figure or just a Prop), then directly drag the item to that target in Scene pane. If doing so on a Genesis figures, e.g. parent a collar to G8F's Neck, the figure doens't need to be in default A-Pose, the item can be correctly parented. You just need to fine-tune the item's TRSs values after parenting.

Why am I only learning about this today after 15 months using Daz? I can't wait to try this.
