I am going to need to get a new desktop. My computer guy is going to build it for me but I need to know, what kind of specs to tell him as far as memory, processing stuff (gpu? cpu, what kind of video card etc, as I have zero clues. I have am running 4.24 and am fine with that. Edited to add that I am willing to put a decent chunk of money into this. If you could recommend the basic specs I need and i know i need a specific type of nvidea card.

You want as much memory on the nVidia card, and two-and-a-half to three times as much system RAM, as you can afford - up to enough to render most of your scenes, which is something only you can guesstimate; do you have trouble fitting your scenes into your current memory? Do you want to do more complex scenes? Sadly once you get above 12GB (a 3060) you may find your only options are the 50x0 cards, at least buying new, which means rendering in DS 2025.
I will let him know we don't want 50xo and I will see what he can do. My graphics card says its a nvideaGEForce GTX 1060 with 6gb so a 12gb would be double what my current graphics card has. my system says it has a total of 16gb ram so the other 10 must be coming from the system. So if I get 12GB graphics card and 36 gb system ram I should be okay? He said he could put my storage capacity in the terabytes so I won't have to use the external drives for my content. I don't know if thats the same thing or not.
Is there anything else I need to be aware of? To stay away from or to add to make it better? and it has to be a nvidea card correct?
Actually the 6GB card probably has close to 0 useful space - I have aq 6GV 1660 of some kind, as well as an 11GB 2080Ti, and for some time the 6GB has not been able to render even a bare Genesis 9 with one of the default materials. Having an RTX card of any type will add about 1GB of effective memory as the card doesn't have to emulate the RTX features, then there is a base amount of RAM taken by the system and the set up for Iray - which are somewhat independent of the card model. So to an extent most of any extra memory over the minimum needed is likely to be available for Iray - a 12GB card will be a lot more than just twice as capable as a 6GB card.
Great I will give him a call tomorrow. Thanks for the help.
With the price of RAM skyrocketting, you may not be able to get the advised amount but I think you should still get as much VRAM as possible to fit in your budget: if you don't have enough RAM, virtual memory will be used and outside of taking longer to send data to the GPU at the beginning of a render (and taking forever to empty the scene), once the render is going, AFAIK, everything the GPU need is stored in its VRAM, so render speed is the same wether you have 24GB of RAM to go along a GPU with 16GB (which is what I have and I have no problem going close to filling the 16 GB of my GPU), or the advised 48+ GB.
I replaced my 24Gb RAM/6Gb GTX1060 with a 64Gb Ram/12Gb RTX3060, and have been amazed at the increase in rendering speed. Looking at 4x minimum. If you can get a 16Gb RTX4060Ti with a 64Gb machine, it'll be a great improvement, 6-8x the rendering performance of the GTX1060. The multi-thread processor speed is relatively unimportant (within limits) if the scene can be loaded into the GPU. However, single thread performance is very important when doing stuff other than rendering, and if you can go for a machine with a fast single thread performance it's good. My machine is an Intel 13th generation i5-13600k with 14 cores (8 fast and 6 slower which are always split into 2 to give 20 functional cores). The 8-off fast core performance is pretty good, but it is a bit flakey and I understand the 14th generation can also suffer from issues too but to a lesser extent. So.. I feel I can suggest min 64Gb RAM, RTX4060Ti or above, but not a processor.

Thank you!
