    I think you probably have the region Seelction tool active - check the Tools menu. For regular selection you want the Node Selection, Universal, Translation, Rotation, or Scale tools to be active. The other thing to check, though I do not think it is relevant here, is the Node Selection Mode in the Tool Settings pane - if that is not set to one of the options that allows Node selection then you will be able to seelct only top level objects (figures, static props, lights, cameras etc. but not bones).

    It seems that Surface Selection tool is activated (Alt Shift + M).

    Hit Alt Shfit + U (Universal Tool) or Alt Shift + V (Node Selection Tool), then try again.
