The Torquinox Carrara Questions Thread

I realize I will probably have more questions, so this will be my official questions thread. Thanks for all of your help!

First question:

I have a model I imported. I want to break some pieces off of it and make them into separate objects. I select the model and go to the model room. I can select polys by shading domain and using selection tools. Then what? I don't see how to break the polys off and make them into their own object. Also, all the geometry in the assembly room seems to be an instance of a master. If I delete the instance, the master appears in the model room but not in the assembly room. I'm definitely missing something. Please help.

I vaguely recall doing this a while back.  Maybe just select all the parts you don't want and delete them?

Thanks Steve. That would work, though I was hoping for a more sophisticated solution. Then there is the issue of masters and instances that seem to populate automatically. I don't need instances. I saw an item in preferences that should solve that. I'll have to check later.

what I do is duplicate the model for as many times I want bits seperated then take each one into the modelling room and delete what I don't want then when done I just group what remains. smiley

Thanks Stezza! I guess that's the plan!

In the model room there is also a detach command so you can drag selected polys out of the way

I found the detach command. Useful! Thanks.

I guess the thing that bugs me about this is that the solution is so brute force and primitive - it's not elegant! But it works, so there's that! Thanks again.

I figured out what to do about the instances and masters. That was a nice, elegant drag-and drop in the Sequencer queue. Then the instance becomes a master and I delete the empty one(s). Very happy!

Here's another question, and hopefully the answer is easy. I notice I can open more than one scene. Can I flip between the scenes? Share elements between them? If so, how? I didn't see the answer for that in my poking about.

If I understand correctly, yes, you can have multiple 3D View Windows with different scenes.  You switch between them with the "Windows" menu at the top.  To share an element, I export it as a *.car file and then import it to the other scene.  Or am I missing your question?

occassionally if you detatch polygons sometimes split object option is no longer greyed out in the ass.room and you can

it will show more than one polymesh in the vertex room

this is rare though, mostly it doesn't work

    That's it exactly! Thank you.

"mostly it doesn't work" laugh It could be fun when it does work. Thanks, Wendy.

Also for splitting an obj into parts 3D builder free with win 10 has a great slicing tool . Can't recall if import and export to and from Carrara are clean though

It's a thought. I prefer to do the work in Carrara. I want to see what I can do here!

  • HeadwaxHeadwax Posts: 10,385

Yes a good idea. I start in Carrara sculpt in blender and 3D Boolean in 3D builder

  • TorquinoxTorquinox Posts: 4,239

3D Builder was dropped from the App Store last year (no loss to me - I don't use app store) but I got the download from MS site using instructions on a another site. @Headwax what makes 3D Builder your goto for booleans?

Clean results in geometry, plus quick, seldom crashes

  • TorquinoxTorquinox Posts: 4,239

Cool! I'll give it a go.

Haha! Me, too, @Headwax . I didn't want to be the first to say it.
