Finally understand Sketchy Iray toon shader -- with a better file structure

I've finally taken the plunge from corporate photorealism to toon renders, so I've just now started exploring Sketchy. I've had it for a while but just have never used it. I could see that it looked like it could give me the results I was looking for, but I just didn't understand how the files were set up. So I rearranged them, and now it makes a lot more sense -- at least to me. In looking at the forums, it looks like I'm not the only person who's intrigued by its promise, but definitely confused by how to actually use it.

The 01 folder applies the various draw styles to both the diffuse color and the outline. I've broken this up into 2 folders -- the first (01) is for draw styles that I'm more likely to use and the second (01a) is for styles I'm less likely to use. The 02 folder is for solid colors for the diffuse.

The 03 folder actually has 4 different types of files in it. I've left all of the colors in the original 03 folder, and put diffuse edge strength, diffuse edge contrast and diffuse normals into separate folders.

I did similarly with the 04 folders. I've left the outline colors in the original folder, and put outline edge strength, outline edge contrast, and outline normals into separate folders.

The 05 folders are if you want to have different draw styles for diffuse and outline, so I've put them into separate folders. I created a new folder (06) for draw scales only.

Now that I understand it, I can finally start playing around with it. Hopefully, this will help anyone else who's been unable to immediately figure out how it works. Happy rendeing!

Moved to Art Studio since it is about using a product rather than Daz Studio itself.

I have this and haven't used it, thanks for the reminder.

There is a user guide pdf and youtube video referenced from the ReadMe page Sketchy - Toon Edge and Art Style Shaders for Iray [Documentation Center].

  • Yes, even with the pdf and the video, it still can be hard to figure out exactly how to use this. As several people in other forum discussions have noted, it can be somewhat confusing. I realized that some of the confusion is because the PA (who knows his product very, very well -- it's just the rest of us who need some help) combined different categories of files into the same folder. Once I separated everything out, it then made a lot more sense as to how, when and why to use each file.
