You can't just leave the mouse around cats and expect it to be there later.

Or ear buds around our border collie. Last week Husband learned a new Life Lesson: When you leave the room you MUST secure your ear buds in their clean sour cream container because Mommy's presence won't stop Gilly from chewing them up.

(I was reading! Which means I have no idea what is happening outside the pages. Which Husband should know after 40 years, & yes he is worse.)

    Our cats like computer mice.

And real mice. And real rats. And Squirrels, though they are somewhat more problematic for a single cat.

Here's a snap of an adult Maine Coon and a 6month Maine Coon kitten checking out their squirrels. The kitten there is about the size of a normal adult moggie:

    Regards,

    Richard

I had a childhood feline friend who hunted squirrels.  I can't remember finding the squirrel tails, but I was told they were found.

We've had a few cats with a findness for squirrels, but I think only one of them tackled adults. One of them set off in pursuit of an adult squirrel, but hesitated when instead oif running it say up and abred its teeth at her.

My friend in high school had a tiny black cat that, full grown, was no bigger than a small kitten. Sweetest, most affectionate little thing... front-declawed, wore a collar with a bell, and she would hunt down and BEHEAD full-grown rabbits, and somehow drag them onto the front porch (seriously, these things were bigger than she was). We all figured it was Darwinism in action. Or else she shape-shifted when no one was looking. The jury was out on that one.

The Spirit of the Great Pumpkin Arises:  Over the last couple of days a volleyball sized, ugly, deformed, pock marked, stemless, runt of the litter, $2 pumpkin sitting on my porch had developed outlines of eyes, nose & mouth.  A worried, sickly grin it is.devil  Yesterday he blew his top and his insides evacuated in a slimy orange heap.  Then today his facial orifices vacated their boundaries and now lead into the dark, depressing, vacant center of the haunted gourd.surprise  But by this time tomorrow night, the flickering, yellow glow of his spirit will shine forth from the holes and entice passing greedy humans with the promise of wickedly sweet treats.  Or for the less demanding, an apple or grapes in a ZipLock bag.  Then as the clock strikes midnight, the spirit vacates, the light goes out and I will be left with far too much chocolate.frown  Enough to last all winter but it will be gone in two weeks.blush

  • The other day I got pictures from our daughter of Younger Grandcat after the pumpkins daughter's roommate was carving.

Pumpkin carving accomplished! Poor Little dude was so revolted by the bowl of innards that he threw up. Twice. But he likes his pumpkin now that it's carved and the guts are gone. He even smiled and patted it and observed, "Big one!" -- I'm glad the giant smiley face found favor, as he wasn't able to express a particular desire for what he wanted carved on his. He also complimented his sibling on their pumpkin - "Awesome!!" - which was sweet of him.

So that's all boxes checked -- Teen Kiddo's costume is finished, as well -- and now we just wait for the High Holy Night of Candy. Forecast is still holding, so no sloshing through snowy slush puddles this year for Teen Kiddo and me. (Little Dude hangs out with his grandparents, as all the unpredictability of trick-or-treating would be way dysregulating for him.) We go in my old neighborhood, which is both nostalgic and sad. The memory-ghosts of herds of children still scamper between houses where every light was lit, and you had to wait your turn to go up the porch, but they're just memories now. So many fewer lights on, and rarely you'll see a little group farther up. Mostly they scamper up to the door, then back to the car that drives them to the next house three doors down. The folk in the house behind my parents' place (we grew up with their kid) had their golf cart out last year, though, blaring music and packed with their grandkids and grandkids' friends. That was pretty awesome.

I'm dressing up as a mermaid for Halloween.  I got the red wig,  I printed this so it is known I'm a mermaid.  I asked copilot ai to make it for Me.  I don't have Daz Studio set up on either computer right now,

complaint/non-complaint combo: On our way back from my folks' place tonighta truck blew through a red light going probably 60 mph. It had just turned green from my side, and if I'd been just a little faster getting into the intersection, he would've T-boned us. And just as I stepped in the door after arriving home, got a call from my parents that I'd left my camera bag there. My camera bag has my cell in it. So if I'd gotten hit, I would've had no way to call for help... assuming I'd even been conscious to do so. There have been multiple fatalities on that intersection from exactly that situation. So the complaint is that the <expletive deleted> driver could very easily have seriously injured -- or probably killed -- some or all of us. Given it was coming towards the passenger side, and that's the side Little Dude is on, and at that speed...

Non-complaint is that things worked out in our favor; whether it was luck or intervention of the ancestors on this night that the veil's the thinnest... don't care. I'll take it and be grateful.

much less terrifying combo: Weather forecast flipped and we got rain tonight. However, Teen Kiddo now has the "cold rain" trick-or-treating box checked. And their cloak kept them warm. And we had umbrellas.

... wow, glad you are OK.

As to Halloween,  the same here weather-wise. It was nice until about 17:00 when it started pouring just before the kids headed out. At least it's not very windy (that happens tomorrow).

@ SilverGirl:  The Great Pumpkin watches all.yes

Complaint:  As expected, I received no candy seekers last night.  Not one.  The spirit of the pumpkin was beautiful, pockmarks and all, yet not enticing enough to attract the few mini-goblins left, in this age of fear, to my door.broken heart

    Non-Complaint:  I have a bowl full of chocolate goodies.devil

Complaint:  This is a 5-week month for me.  SS payment has to last 5 weeks instead of 4.  Still 3 more to go, and I'm already scraping the bottom of the barrel.frown  Put too much into my savings account.indecision  Pea soup & water for a weekfrown

Non-complaint:   No more symphonies scheduled for this season.  Although, Symphony Buddy did mention that the Dvorak 9th Symphony heart is coming up sometime soon, somewhere around here.  So, perhaps...indecision  Food for the soul.

We had rain and high winds last night, so very few trick-or-treaters. I'd say fewer than a dozen. So now we have a huge amount of leftover candy. Seems like all the kids that do go get their parents to drive them to the rich neighborhoods these days, anyway. My parents would have never.

Sorry! I'm glad you are being slow & cautious. I'm all for revoking the licenses of people doing that & tire clamshell booting their tire until the suspension expires.

  • No Trick or Treat people here last night (Non-Complaint), but this evening the cats were frightened quite badly (Complaint). Two houses not too far away celebrate Guy Fawkes night with a large quantity of fireworks every year, and seem to try to out-do each other; This year was no exception. Lasted close on to 2 hours with a number of quite significant detonations which did the cats no good at all. The 'official' day is 5th of November, and as that's a Wednesday, we'll probably get more next weekend too, and any dry evening in between then and now. Will have to keep the cats in every evening - they won't be happy and will make it felt. Regards, Richard.

I know a few intersections around here have gotten cameras installed in the last few years. Not sure if that's one of them, but I hope so.

I don't understand why people can't just slow down, pay attention, and drive decent. Whatever the all-fired hurry, it's not worth risking that.

My sympathies. Around here folk not only celebrate July 4th, but the two weeks leading up and pretty much the whole month after. Like, dude. Enough already. Not everyone wants to hear it.

At least its drk earlier here in November than it is in the US in July, so most fireworks sinish at a decent hour (unlike New Year's Eve).

  • Complaint: The bad guys always seem to win, don't they?

Non-Complaint: Pizza tonight more than made up for last month's sad little underwhelming circle. I wonder if the pizza place knew and was trying to make up for it.

...I had it pretty good most of this year.

The normal date for my monthly deposit from the SSA is the 3rd of each month. My bank introduced a nice perk late last year in that they advance the deposit amount to my account two days beforehand.(on the 1st).  Now if the original day for the deposit falls on a weekend (Saturday or Sunday)m the  SSA would deposit the funds to my bank on the preceding Friday, which means with the 2 day advance, I actually get it on the last Wednesday of the month . It gets better, fot If the 1st falls on a weekend (like this month) I get an extra 2 day advance from the bank, so for example, for November my deposit appeared in my account four days early on Thursday morning.

Including this month. I received 6 deposits earlier than normal

Of course the downside, with December 1st being on a Monday, it will make November feek like 5 weeks long. since the last payent. Looks like Turkey Spam™ tor Thanksgiving as I need to buy a new pair of insulated waterproof gloves (and several paris ot heavy thermal socks for the coming winter.

...I'm the same as the area of town I live in seems to be a "free-for-all" with all the impatient and careless motorists driving through stop signs and red lights, not signalling turns, going the wrong way on one way streets, and just plain driving aggressively.

Whenever I come to an intersection I stand back a bit, look both ways, and only cross if a car is at least a block away as arthritis has seriously slowed my walking pace.

Traffic enforcement is also very lax here.

I am so glad you and the family are safe. We had a similar case here in Denver where a teen was drunk, speeding with friends and killed another driver. The drunk teen and friends went to the hospital. And speeding drivers blasting through intersections against the lights, ... it seems to be almost a daily occurence. I have no idea what people are thinking of. When you get into a vehicle to drive it, that is a weapon that should be driven with all due respect for its power.

Not quite a complaint: For years I wondered what it was like to be awake during a time change. Today, Simon decided I needed to find out. Mew calls at 9:48pm, 12:45am, 1:56am, 1:56am! That woke me fully and my brain tried to figure out how I had two 1:56am wakeups! Fall back. Ah so it was my normal (2:56am) wakeup time and he wanted feeding. So as a cat mom I got up and did my duty. Both Charlie and Simon are now asleep on the bed behind me, fed, watered, brushed, and happy. I am on my second cup of coffee. And I just read about the new version 6.25 giving both Mac and Windows users fits. Nice Halloween gift there.

My hair is growing back!  I forgot when I last shaved it, but it is growing back.  Maybe this afternoon I can shave it before I take a shower.

Yesterday was not a great day.  I mainly slept.  I didn't feel like doing anything, but I did order something from Walmart to come today.  I forgot to replenish my poptarts.

I was camped out in the arrivals hall of Sea-Tac on a Fall Back November Sunday with a bunch of other travelers, all of us waiting for security to open so that we could proceed to the gates. Cue the collective groan when 01:59 gave way to 01:00 and we all realized that we had to spend an extra hour on those cold, hard floors.

Complaint: Boy, I hate the Dodgers.

Non-Complaint: As of today, I am technically eligible for retirement. It's technical in that in order to stop working today, I'd have to convince my boss to let me use up my two months of accrued vacation across all of November and December. I don't really see that happening. Still, fewer than sixty calendar days now...

I feel your pain. I remember returning from Europe and somehow being in Delaware (?) sitting on a cold floor with a group of other servicemen and they were trying to teach me Hearts to pass the time during our layover. l was 22 and they had carried my luggage for me (no wheels then) and they weighed a ton. Marines are so sweet. But we had been awake for at least 20+ hours and still had at least 10 more before we were at our respective home terminals. No food, liquids, or anyone from the airport around. I can't remember when I made it back to San Francisco.
