I just installed all Genesis content from Scratch

It took a few days. First, I organized all the originals into folders. (Genesis, Genesis 2, etc.) Then I organized into categories such as People, Poses, etc.

Then I used WinZip to extract the items into a new folder structure.

Every item was automatically placed under the "Content" folder by WinZip. I thought that was strange.

Then I eliminated every "PA" folder. There were no problems.

Now I'm making a backup copy of my new Genesis collection.

The DIM Zips have a Content folder to hold content, plug-ins and other types of file will have their own top-level folder. A lot of content froim other sources will also put a top level folder in their zips, though unless theya re DIM ready it serves no functional purpose and the mixture of names (some will use My Library or My Daz 3D Libnrary) is just a booby trap for installers.

    Richard. thanks for the reply.

I've got to the point in my life where I get easily lost by some things. I just can't cope with the way DAZ organizes their content.

That's why I've started a total reinstall of all my content.

I have placed every item into its own folder. I've divided everything into categories.

I will install all the content from scratch. I won't use DIM any more.

And I won't join Premiere because I don't want to be saddled with DAZ's way of organizing things.

  • I have installed my content manually forever.  I need things to be where I remember them, which is probably different for everyone.

If every product has its own content directory then that wil make loading massively slow - the advice is to have no more than ten content  directories, as when loading a file (e.g. a texture or morph) DS has to check the relative path in each content directory in turn until it finds a hit or runs out of places to look; for content that is well down the list that will be time consuming.

If you are using file locations to organise then metadata and categorisation are irrelevant to you; if you are in fact using categories  then you need to update the metadata only to access the exclusive premier content (the sahpes for the Daz name 9 characters) and that will not interfere with your own user data - just keep it in its own top-level folder rather than Default and you can ignore the Daz organisation..

I have the original files organized into folders so I can find them easily.

For the install, I have different categories such as Genesis, "Generation 4" (all people before Genesis). Scenes Favorite, etc.

Some collections contain both people and whatever scenes go well with them. For instance, the Carnival stuff includes clothes for Michael 4, etc. Same for "Old West" stuff.

The Genesis collection includes scenes for the Moonshine Diner, stuff from i13 and other scenes that have poses and/or clothes for Genesis People.

    *** Edited to clarify***

I have more than 10 collections. Now that you mention it, DAZ Studio does hesitate a bit when working on stuff. I need to whittle things down.

I'm posting an update. My work was needlessly complicated because WinZip unzipped the files into a Content folder.

When DIM installs that same content, it apparently eliminates the Content folder.

I got totally confused moving all those files and folders around. I surely made some errors.

I scrapped that project after working for a day or two. Now I'm letting DIM install the files first.

Then I'll arrange the "Facing" files the way I want.
