What is the benefit of 3DLight update in 4.9 ?
in The Commons
Pretty much what the title says.
I’ve read that one of the features (well, if we can call it a feature) is that the 3Dlight engine will be updated.
I know that the dazD 3Dlight engine is FAR (far far far) away from the full 3Dlight Pro that it is used in major company for big movies. (with maya / 3Dmax etc..)
But what can we expect in this area for the upcoming daz3D 4.9 update?

Actually, no, it is not far, far away...in fact, it is one better than the free standalone, full featured version...the included 3DL is not core locked. If you had a 32 core workstation, Studio's 3DL would use all 32 cores.
There have been a lot of improvements/fixes/updates since 11.0.130 to 12.0.27. Many of them are speed improvements.
Studio 4.9 uses version 12.0.27 - 2015-10-06 of 3Delight which is about 4 revisons behind the latest version of 3Delight..
I don't think so. Yes I know that the free edition is core blocked. But when you see what it is achieved by 3DLight pro in major movies, you just can't do anything close to that with our daz 3dlight. Even with nice shaders/lights etc..
If it was, they shouldn't update the 3Dlight for daz :-p
so, the question remains unanswered ;-)
Oh, Oh. an update to 3DL. Not that I'm against improvrd versions; BUT I have a large investment in shaders that use 3DL. Will they all still work in the new version?
I haven't checked in a couple of weeks, but 12.0.27 was the last version I downloaded, so yeah it could be a couple more up from that one.
Um...any restrictions that exist are on the Studio side of things, not the 3DL. No, Studio does no have all the access to all the bells and whistles that something like Maya does, not because 3Delight is limited, but rather Studio is.
99.9% of the 11.0,x shaders I've run in 12.0.27 have not even triggered a recompile warning. (Yes, I've been exporting as RIB files and doing most renders that way...)
Greetings,
Here's the thing...you CAN do all that with the 3Delight included by DAZ. Except that studios have professional shader developers, who spend exhausting hours building those shaders for those movies. And they don't have to make them bulletproof or easy to use, so that Joe Public can just download them and use them. The actual things you can do in 3Delight that are just...not exposed or available in DAZ Studio because nobody's figured out how to make it 'easy to use' yet, are...
To be clear, the same is mostly true of Iray. The MDL is pretty insanely powerful... Sometimes I feel like DAZ Studio is a very nice Lexus or Nissan, built on top of space shuttle engines.

Interestingly enough the free standalone version of 3Delight that you can download from 3delight.com is only at 12.0.19..
Yeah that is the main thing here, I can only imagine how long the artists hired by the major film studios spend making impressive custom shaders for the film they are working on.. Also lets not forget the studios have very deep pockets when it comes to this sort of thing..
My bad, I should have actually looked at the version number instead of assuming. In any case, the shaders are working fine.
Umm...I think you need to check your dilithium crystals for cracks...
Just curious--does this update fix Age of Armour's cameras (volume and graphic arts)?
i would like to know also
especially the graphic art cam
Just updating the 3DL with 4.9 won't break your shaders. They will continue to work as they always have.
