First ... I hope it's okay to post this to this section. I couldn't find a forum that this really fit. If not, maybe an admin can move it?
For my DAZ hobby I am currently using an ASUS ROG G752VY-DH72 17-Inch Gaming Laptop I purchased back in 2016. It's been an awesome laptop and is still going strong. Of late however it has begun developing a few odd quirks and I am concerned it may be reach the end. That, in addition to the fact that RTXes are recommended for modern graphics systems, has me investigating the possibility of a new system.
I bought a gaming system back in 2016 under the belief that if it can handle games, it should be able to handle renders. But I am wondering if this is sound logic.
Do I need a gaming system or is there a better option?
What do you think?
What would you recommend?

How big are your renders (in mmeory consumption, in as far as you can tell - I imagine the GPU is not used much in Iray so you may need to check how RAM usage changes at render time). Assuming you are using Iray then a GPU with too little RAM is a paperweight, adding more RAM than you need is not going to help rendering. Gernally you want at least two and ideally three times as much system RAM as GPU RAM, to allow for data preparation; having less may prevent you from taking full advantage of the GPU (though it will still work fine for smaller scenes). Bear in mind that using a 50x0 GPU requires DS 2025, which is currently alpha only; using 3Delight requires DS 4 (the versions that could be integrated into DS 2025 are effectively a different render engine and would require all-new materials). Also, if you use 3Delight make sure you have a copy of the installers for DS and plug-ins as 3Delight will be removed from the DS 4 installers at the end of this year (and the DS 3 installers, I assume).
Thanks for the reply Richard.
Though much ofm this seems greek to me - me being more of a user than cimputer technician - it at least gives me some information to use when looking at the specs on a new system.
Sounds like another gaming system is the way to go.
Thanks again.
Hi @DarkElf
Do you need a laptop? Unless you truly, truly need the portability, get a desktop for 3D work. The components in a laptop are not equivalent to the corresponding desktop part (even when they bare the same name), and are designed for optimal power/heat dissipation, not performance. And then you could even put the savings toward a better GPU, the thing that is going to most determine the quality of your user experience.
But I hope you enjoy your new system, whatever it turns out to be; it's always exciting to get new hardware to play with.
Yes. I read that elsewhere. I definitely want a laptop. Often my only time to play in DAZ is when on vacation when I go away.
Thank you for the reply to this however.
