tI keep mulling this over. I get excited about doing my art again, and the prospect of a new version of DAZ Studio. I think it's time to get a new computer.
But then reality sets in. In my estimation, a new computer should involve an nVidia 5XXXX card. But that only works with DAZ Studio 2025. That's still in Alpha.
So maybe the best thing is to wait till the latest version of DAZ Studio is an official release.
I understand your difficulty deciding what to do and when to do it. Here's some info that may or may not help.
I was unaware that the 5090 would not work with DAZ 4 and bought that new computer you're thinking about. My new computer was dead in the water until the alpha was released. Since then I build my scenes entirely in DAZ 4 and then render them in DAZ 2025 alpha. I do this because cannot live without the scripts and plug-ins I've purchased, in most cases they do things I don't know how to do. I experience a few minutes delay when I close my scenes in DAZ 4 and open them in DAZ 2025 alpha. Since I'm not highly skilled using DAZ I sometimes have to do this multiple times because I discover flaws in my scene after rendering them. Of course the extra step or steps are annoying but considering how much time I save rendering using the 5090 it's a large net gain. Another big advantage is that the 5090 has 32 GB of VRAM so I don't have to play around with 'Scene Optimizer' to reduce the GPU memory requirements. This saves me a lot of time that I used to spend deciding what I can compress without severely reducing the quality of renders so my scenes would fit in the VRAM of my old card. I'm not knocking 'Scene Optimizer', it's a good product that served me well but I'm happy I no longer need to use it.
I will be very happy to stop using DAZ 4 when DAZ 2025 alpha becomes a final product provided I can use the many scripts and plug-in products I've purchased. I understand scripts and plug-ins will need to be modified to work in DAZ 2025 and it's uncertain if all of the authors of the products I own will do this. If products I can't live without are not updated I'll continue using the DAZ 4 and DAZ 2025 combination even after DAZ 2025 is a final product. I'm OK with this because I'll have been using this workflow for a very long time before DAZ 2025 is a final product. I downloaded the DAZ 4 installation file to make sure I can keep using it as long as necessary. (They provided instructions for doing this for people who want to continue using 3Delight after they remove it from DAZ 4.)
Cheers!
jjb24, thanks for sharing your experience. Sounds like you have a powerful computer system. Your strategy makes sense,
I don't use any scripts or plugins. I gave up on those after DAZ abandoned various software titles such as Carrara, in addition to some plugins whose names I forgot.
My situation is likely different from yours. I'm on a limited, fixed income. I received my current "DAZ computer" as a gift from my Dad about 6 years ago, It cost about $1,000 at the time.
The computer has a nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Super 6gb GPU. It handles most of my simple work.
I can't count on Dad's generosity. He's now living in a nursing home, facing increased expenses.
Any decision I make depends on where I can get the financial means. That's why it helps to stay informed!
Split to its own thread since the Alpha thread isn't the placew for an extended conversation that isn't about the alpha.
Thanks for the help, Richard.
I get totally lost in the more technical information. However, my thoughts about upgrading my computer are most definitely about the alpha!
