Yeah, I've got big plans for using MEC4D's  http://www.daz3d.com/mec4d-pbs-shaders-vol-1-for-iray on the glut of sci fi stuff I just picked up in today's category sale. That product might be my favorite thing I've picked up over the last few months - it's got a ton of applications.

The sci fi category sale has been my favorite part of this year's pc sale so far. Great stuff at 79 cents a pop. Definitely not meh.

@timmins.william - Now that I've picked up the moonscapes package, I'm going to have to go back and reread all your good posts on how to get old backdrops/environments to work in iray.

There are a lot of cool looking (but old) items in the Sci-Fi sale, but I'm curious if they can be converted for Iray.

If a model only comes as a .cr2 file, would it have surfaces that can be edited to use Iray?

I do it all the time. The object will have a surfaces tab - slap the good old IRay Uber Shader on all of them and Bob's Your Uncle. Then you can tweak to get things the way you want or just replace any surfaces that don't come up to scratch with, perhaos, something from one of the many general purpose iRay Shader packs in the store.

Yippeeee! I'm so POSITIVE these days! :)

As a long-timer, I guess I'm nostalgic for the old days in general, and the 'good old days' for the PC were an innocent, fun time.  Kind of a carnival-like, fun, filled-with surprises each day.   I too have almost all the stuff in these bundles, but I look at it as this being the fun/magical time for newcomers, which I once was...

I was hoping that while not PC items, a really nice sale (60-70%) on some of the newer characters like Bethany, etc would appear.  Then it would once again, be an innocent, fun time for me.  C'mon Jack, persuade Marketing to make a 60+ old geezer relive those glory years gone bye....    ;-)    Ray

I'm sure it is different for people who have been around for a few years, and already have most of the items that are on sale now. As a new DS user, it's a nice thing to fill up the library with some badly needed products. And even products, that I might-possibly-maybe-use-sometime-in-the-distant-future :) And it's exciting to come online each morning to see what's on sale today.

A lot of the older PC items have been, or are in the process of being, updated for the latest DS, and most of the time they include both 3DL and Iray presets.

  • I'm 50/50 on the sale as well. I did buy a bunch of stuff, but there wasn't a whole lot that really jumped out at me. The hair sale was indeed very nice. And there were several items that I'd been waiting a really long time for them to go on sale and they finally did. So that was worth it. However, the $20 poses when already at 40% off don't interest me and there seems to be a WHOLE LOT OF THEM LATELY. Yes, I'm screaming lol. No, not really. There are a lot of poses coming out latetly though. When did poses go $10+ anyways?

So you know, not great, but not bad. Pretty sure DAZ is making money off of me, so it must be working.

Well, my join date for the Daz site is 2004 AND I'm a Poser user. I expected the pickin's to be slim in this sale.

    Wrong!

Today, for example. How, how did the PC crew manage to put together a sci fi bundle out of which I already owned exactly.... nothing? Wow!

And Jack's new release - that is one mighty discount for one lovely looking room.

So I figured there might be days when I won't buy a new release because of compatibility, so I might as well pick up some major Jack Tomalin packages that I neglected to get during the PA sale -- and, heck, it's just the beginning of the second week.

Not "meh" for me, and certainly not for my poor, poor threadbare wallet. :D :D

This is probably why the DS versions are now double the size of the poser versions. For props and environments I still only get the poser versions. Makes my life easier. I don't use Iray so nothing is lost.

I am surprised they are double as I would have thought that on the whole they are adding iRay shaders but not new textures. Since texture files are normally 90%+ of the download size, I assume adding iRay would make minimal difference.

I know, it confused me too. But I didn't take the time to analyze the files. Might do that now out of curioisity.

I stick with poser props simply because when I first got started the daz folder was only material settings. When we started getting native daz props I never wanted to switch over. The daz native and poser native were similar sizes. Now that the daz files are so big in some cases, I'm curious what is going on...brb. (its not all cases, some times they are still similar size, but have noticed some that are 2x as big)

    BRC Beautiful Darkness - Cloisters

BRC Beautiful Darkness Cloisters DS 37.40 MB
BRC Beautiful Darkness Cloisters Ps 12.91 MB

I took a look, the texture folder for the DS version is much larger...still digging in.

In this case DS version has 29 textures, Poser has 16...Also images of the same name are larger file size in the DS version. For example BC_C_Bench.jpg is 430k for poser install, 886k for daz install. Quality looks the same. I could see how when repacking they didn't compress the textures as much, but not sure why the DS has more textures.

Daz version has displacement maps. That explains the other files. Poser doesnt.

The furniture packs I got not too long ago also have similar size differences and I bet that is for the same reason.

Where appropriate, I've added in normal maps in addition the usual bump.. so that actually adds a fair amount of file size.. so Iray versions can add a fair amount.

Thanks Jack, that makes sense, and know I recall seeing some new normal maps.

...been pretty much light on the purchases for me so far, just a couple of the Crazy Deals to flesh out collections.

Most of the new releases that trigger the 50% discount have been either horror themed ('natch being it's October - All Hallows Eve & all) or primarily content for G3 characters.

I still have not adopted G3 because of the change to the skin map structure which makes it is totally incompatible with skins from older figures.  It would require more of an investment in new content (mainly character morphs) than I can afford right now just to get enough skins to make it useful.

With a couple three weeks to go, hoping to might see something that really does catch my eye.

I think my problem has been that I already have pretty much everything I want from the PC+ Crazy Deals we're seeing. PC+ items are so cheap for a member anyway that I tend to just buy them when I need them, regardless of sales.

I can see how this'd be a good sale for a total newcomer though.

It's great for me, because architecture is usually a rather low priority unless it's a kit; with my webcomic, I want the ability to create a bunch of different rooms and corridors and whatnot of a particular 'style,' and one-off big halls or ornate corridors are mostly useless unless I'm specifically doing a scene in a room that should look unique.

So, gobs of architecture I'm paying pennies for? Woot!

The only somewhat annoying thing is trying to light these spaces, because the 3DL lighting doesn't really convert easily over to Iray in almost every case, and going in and placing lights... woof.

Agree with RTCSpanky. For some of us long time PC+ members this sale is no benefit as we've already purchased allot of the products in the bundled items before sad

The PA Festival was really generous, especially for those who had 4 Rev Ups when they changed things around. This sale isn't as generous. And coming on the heels of the PA Festival, it's really obvious. This is only my second Anniversary sale, and I don't have a lot of the items in the bundles and crazy deals, but from what I've read it seems these have always been mostly older content. So no surprise there.

But all the new releases are 40% off instead of 30%, and DO have an additional 40%, for a total of 64% off. (sorry DAZ, it's not 65%...) Then all the PC+ new releases also have 40% off their normal PC+ price. There have been several PC+ themed sales with 50/60% off, and several general products themed sales with 40% off, 50% if you buy a new release. So overall, it's not a bad sale. I imagine it would be similarly "meh" if it came on the heels of March Madness.

Sure, there are many things on sale that don't interest you, or you already have. I've only been here about 13 months now, and I can say the same thing. (I'm not into the SciFi stuff, for example.) The sale's what, about half over? And that's if they don't go over an extra week or two like they did with the PA Festival. There is plenty of time for something I really want or need to show up on sale. In the meantime, I can give my wallet some much needed R&R. Maybe earn a few more dollars, too, before something I can't live without shows up...

I'm assuming DAZ has their reasons for putting the two sales one after the other, but I wonder if it wouldn't be better to put a few months between the big sales. You can't move March Madness or the Anniversary Sale, but what if the big PA sale were in July? That leaves three months between it and the other two. Just a thought.

I think I'm more disappointed there aren't more new items that support both G2F and G3F. I won't buy something just because it supports both, but if I like it, I'm more likely to buy now if it does. Otherwise, it goes on my wishlist to maybe be purchased later. Maybe not.

Being a new member I totally agree with this comment.  I joined right aroudn the beginning of the PA Sales.  So for me the last two months have really been a gold mine because  I owned absolutely nothing,  But even as a newbie, there are lots of things that just don't interest me. And I am pretty grateful for that or my family may end up living in the car (not really, I actually do have more self control than that lol) But its been super fun to be able to fill up my content for a more than reasonable price.  I am sure in a couple of years the sale may not be as exciting and honestly, that's okay.   I will still enjoy browsing and I have added a HUGE amont of stuff to my wishlist for later which I would probably never have found on my own.

I already own 10 of 10 items in crazy deal 3 and 4. Had 6 of 10 in crazy deals1 and 2, so they were barely worth bothering with. ;(

As someone who bounces around, from 3D perch to 3D perch, my return to DAZ has been lots of fun.  :-)  I have some of the things in the Free PC bundle, but some I didn't.  And I'm seeing PC prices not much higher than those I saw when I first came to DAZ, many, many moons ago.  Some even lower.  I like all the materials being added for IRay, and I really like the quality of the new clothing and figures.  Clothing with simulated poses is wonderful, and even the PC-price pieces are extremely well made.  And finally, someone is taking a chance on making figures that don't come from a mold.  All in all, exciting days for this oldie/newbie. :-)  Life has certainly been interesting lately.

Yes, but there is a new item *every day* and some of them are great. That's seven in a week, not counting the freebie. And the freebies are hardly shabby, either. It's definitely been worth my while, even if I do neeed to keep reining myself in from impulse buys that are pretty, or cool, but may never get used.

..still, so a majority of the new offerings seem to be for G3F (even Daz-O's and PC items).

Not biting until there are both an updated Skin Builder Pro, and Growing Up morphs for G3F.

  • Oso3DOso3D Posts: 15,085

Yeah, I had to pass on a bunch of 'buy G3F item, then get...'
No. I'm not getting G3F stuff. Ever.

But I've been loving the crazy deals. Eager to see another one. ;)

Wow... Really thought the mid-sale catch up was going to last longer than 1 day. I had stuff in the cart ready to purchase, went to bed, then woke up to find its over already. Darn.

Once again Daz shot themselves in the foot as far as my spending goes.

I've had that happen to me, too. But not with a catch up sale. However, this time you can't really blame DAZ. They specifically stated in the banner is was "one day only." It's in the newsletter, too: http://www.daz3d.com/newsletter/2015/special/10-31pcsale/10-31pcsale.html

The good news is it was a "mid-sale" catch up. There should be another one at the end of the sale. Hopefully it will also have the items at 40% off.

Ah fair point. I don't bother reading their banners too closely anymore because more often than not they don't have end dates on them. My bad.

It started out with that text, but I remember seeing a different text on the banner later that day.

  • Bundles didn't help much, they never do because I am too much of an impulse buyer and owned at least 75% of the items in them already.  I'm going to have to learn how to sit on my hands more.  Overall, it wasn't a bad sale though.  A little annoyed the Male Genesis 3 model didn't get released during it and the lines between the PA sale and the PC sale became a bit blurred since there were a bunch of PA stores and items tacked on to it.  Would have liked to see something a bit more exciting done with the DAZ originals.
