Using Genesis 9 Skin on Genesis 8 Figures

FauvistFauvist Posts: 2,219

Is there a method or product that will allow me to use skin textures made for Genesis 9 on Genesis 8 figures?

Thanks!

That's great!  Is there somethig similar for Genesis 8 male?

Nope, Cayman Studios decided not to make the version for G8M for some reason...

Alternatively, without any product or maps conversion, you can make it by using the method of Material Suit ~~ The screenshot down below is Michael 8.1 using a G9 Material Suit with Michael 9's skin textures.

That's perfect.  Where do you find  the G9 Material Suit?  Or is it something you made yourself?

Yeah, we can just made it work by ourselves. How to do it:

    1. Load a G9 Dev Load into the scene, Show Hidden Properties... in Parameters pane, under Hidden > Clones, dial Genesis 8 Male. (ss1)
    2. Select Left Thigh of G9, dial Side-Side to 6.0, then Right Thigh > Side-Side to -6.0. Now it's a genuine G8M Clone. (ss2)
    3. Set G9's Resolution Level to Base. Export it to OBJ file (File > Export...), with the file name as G9 MaterialSuit. (ss3)
    4. Delete G9, Load a G8.1M Dev Load. Import OBJ file (File > Import...) into the scene. Rig G9 MaterialSuit object to G8M with Transfer Utility (Edit > Figure > Transfer Utility...). (ss4)
    5. Select G8.1M, switch to Geometry Editor, in Tool Settings pane, under Surfaces, click + sign on surfaces of Arms, Body, Ears, Face, Fingernails, Head, Legs, Lips, Mouth, Teeth and Toenails. Only leave Eyes related surfaces unselected! (ss5)
    6. Right-click in Viewport, Geometry Assignment > Set Auto-Hide Faces for Attachment... Select G9 MaterialSuit in pop-up. Accept. (ss6)
    7. Alt Shift + U. Select G9 MaterialSuit node. Right-click > Fit "G9 MaterialSuit" to... , select None. (ss7)  Then do it again, Fit the MaterialSuit to G8.1M again. You'll see G8.1M is hidden.
    8. Select G9 MaterialSuit node, Edit > Figure > Scene Identification.., change Node Name to Genesis9, set Compatibility Base to /Genesis 9/Base. (ss8)
    9. Now you can apply a G9 Material Preset to Material Suit. Then apply a G8M Material Preset to G8.1M to give Eyes textures... as needed. (ss9)

Finally save the Material Suit as a Wearable Preset or Figure Asset.

Wow, thank you so much for all the information and images.  I'll try it.  I'll have to save this for future reference.  I would never have been able to figure all this out myself.

    Thanks!

Hi again, I did it.  That was a real learning experience!  The only thing I didn't understand was your instruction #5 where it says "Only lead Eyes related surfaces."  I didn't know what that meant, or where "lead" eyes was located, and it doesn't appear on the screencapture for that instruction.  So I ended up with the Genesis 8.1 character with the Genesis 9 textures successfully applied, but the eyeballs part of the figure are invisible.  Maybe if you ould clarify that one point, I'll try it again and see if I can get the eyes to appear.

    Thanks for your help!

I think that was supposed to be "only leave eyes surfaces", as in you replace everything but the eyes.

Thanks for answering.  I didn't select the eyes, so I guess I did leave them.  But where are they?  I don't know how to make them visible.  The G8.1 figure is completely invisible.  If I leave the eyes, does that mean I can't use G9 materials on the eyes?  Do I use G8.1 materials on the eyes?

Genesis 9 Dev Load doesn't have any geometry for the eyes. Do you not get an empty area where the eyes should be when you followed the process?

I'll attach an image of what I got.  I don't know what I'm supposed to do about the eyes.

    Thanks

Ah, sorry for some typos there ! Yes, as Leana said, I meant: Only leave Eyes related surfaces unselected !  You can redo the whole process. Or, correct it by following the below steps > How to modify Auto-Hide setup:

    1. Select G9 MaterialSuit node in Scene pane, Scene Identification... change Preferred Base to /Genesis 8/Male. (ss1)
    2. Select Genesis 8.1 Male, with Geometry Editor, click minus sign (-) on the surfaces of Cornea, EyeMoisture, EyeSocket, Irises, Pupils and Sclera, to unselect them. You should only see + signs on them ! (ss2)
    3. Right-click in Viewport, Geometry Assignment > Set Auto-Hide Faces for Attachment... Select G9 MaterialSuit in pop-up. Accept. (above step 6)
    4. Alt Shift + U. Unfit G9 MaterialSuit, re-fit it to Genesis 8.1 Male ( above Step 7 ). Eyes surfaces should be back.
    5. Select Genesis 8.1 Male, load a Material Preset from a G8M character (ss3).

In your screenshot, expand the node: Genesis 8, then choose Male under it.

The screenshots I attached to the above post were gone for some reason. I re-attached them, just check the first one.

In the screencapure of the geometry editor that you posted - it appears to open with everything deselcted.  When I open the geometry editor -  everything has a plus sign next to it.  So there's already a plus sign on the surfaces of the eyes.  Sorry I'm having so much trouble.

It seems that the settings are not correct... If the plus sign is shown, it means the surface is not selected, while if the minus sign is shown, it means the surface is selected.

Suggest you start it over. Better firstly review the video tutorial that I posted : https://mega.nz/file/XexUzYAL#LAM74H8iQ_qWK_dLo1Q35QrRYRTxAm8TYn5xxQYG0mE

Hi, thank you so much for your instructions, screencaptures, and video tutorial!  I was successful in getting the Genesis 9 skin texture onto both G8M and G8.1M.  My confusion came from using a Mac and not a PC, so  instructions that included things like "Alt Shift + U" made me probably push wrong keys.  The other thing is that I'm using an older version of Studio than you, and using it isn't the exact same experience.

Does this same process work for transfering Genesis 9 textures onto the geoshells of the G8 figures?

    Thanks again!

In the attached image the figure on the left is G8M and on the right is 8.1M, and the skin texture is Genesis 9.

on left is G8M on right is G8.1male both with G9 skin.jpg

I have not tried this yet, but in some material suits opening the mouth looks like a scene from a horror movie. Is this the case with this suit?

I haven't tried it, but if it looks bad, I'll replace the inside of the mouth with textures from different characters until I find something that looks good.

Ahh,  I forgot about the expression part.... but it can be fixed by using corrective morphs.  I made two corrective morphs for Mouth Open and Jaw Open (ss 1 ~ 2), but I can only share the Modifier assets ...

You have to firstly save the Material Suit as a Figure Asset... them place the corrective morph files in the attached ZIP into the data folder of the Figure Asset of Material Suit, e.g. /data/Fauvist/Material Suit G8M/Base/Morphs/Fauvist/Base/

Remember to bring Mouth and Teeth back from Auto-Hide setup (still by following the above 5 steps' tutorial) ... before saving Figure Asset (by using the settings in below screenshot 3) ~~ smiley

As for geoshell for G9, just load geoshell to MaterialSuit... then apply Material Preset to geoshell node as usual.

It's depend on what you have installed on your machine, but on mine, when I want to easily get back to Genesis 3, 8 or 9 to set them as Compatibilities in the metadata editor, I type 'Starter': in my case, the first product is the Genesis 9 Starter Essentials, which is two products below all the Genesis compatibility base roots.

Those scar textures are the exact product that I wanted to use on G8.  And now I'll be able to do it!
