Paypal puts "temorary hold" on payment to DAZ??

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone else had ever had this happen to them when using Paypal at DAZ.  I used my Paypal Credit account.  The following is all quoted from info on the transaction on my account page:

"Regulations require us to take a closer look at some transactions. Your payment is temporarily pending while we review it."

I also received a special email from them that states, in part, the following:

"To comply with government regulations, PayPal is required to review certain transactions. The payment you sent is currently being reviewed and we will complete this process within 72 hours. This review only involves this transaction and does not affect the use of your PayPal account."

I have been using Paypal for 15 years and have had a credit account for about the last 3 years.  This has NEVER happened to me!

I looked at my list of purchases and wondered if they had a problem with that?  "She ordered breast and glute products so there is obviously going to be sex involved.  It'll be twisted with the, 'Maid of Honor for Genesis 2 Female(s)' and the 'Inciter for Genesis 2 Male(s).'  Towel sets, male undergarments, ropes and shackles and hand-to-hand combat!  And good grief, she's throwin' in a shark, too"!  blush

Any insight out there?

It happened to me, too, though the products I bought at the time had nothing to do with human anatomy or anything that could be mestaken for something. ;-)

It might be everything from your zip-code to the bank name or credit card company you are using, or just a mere "random" pick... I never found out what triggered it in my case..

    @ lee_lhs

Thanks for the reply.  So, it finally went through alright, but they didn't tell you anything?  Weird.  The credit is actually "PayPal Credit", they're own credit account.  As long as the payment gets approved and applied that'll be ok.  I'm just very puzzled.  Thanks, again, I feel a bit better now.

I have had this happen to me several times before with an ordinary PayPal payment. I doubt it has anything to do with the order details; more likely just a random spot check. I wouldn't give it a second thought.

This happened to me before. I think it is some sort of audit. They let the transaction through in less than a day but gave me no explanation. It was quite frustrating. The hyperlinks they gave me went nowhere

My recommendation is to buy yourself gift cards. I've had my bank put a hold on my card because of 'suspicious activities' if I buy lots of individual things. (I once spent $100 buying ebooks at Amazon, each about $1-2, and my bank pooped kittens)

Banks don't like small purchases because that is how many criminals rob accounts, figuring that many people and banks will notice a large purchase, but let the little ones by. Sometimes, that is also the way hackers use to first test a credit card number (just like DAZ does when you change or update your card - I wish they wouldn't do that!). When my card was sucked up in the Target store credit card mess, a couple months passed and someone first used the number to purchase a couple fish dinners near Chicago (I live a few hundred miles away). The bank let those go through as they were charge purchases in the normal range. They declined and flagged it though, when whoever it was tried to spend over a hundred dollars later that day at Jewel - a grocery store. I never buy that much at a grocery store where I always use my PIN anyway. The bank called the next morning first thing (a Sunday) and issued a new card after I verified my recent local purchases.

Not az DAZ, but it has happened to me before a couple of times, while being the seller side (the one receiving the money). Never received any detailed explanation, I always explained to them what the transaction was, and it always got through. Seems to be random.

Be thankful imo that the credit card company does this; it's likely to be fraud related to ensure you are who you say you are, and that you're not doing something illegal. :)

With my credit card I need to make at least 30 purchases a month to get the lowest account fees. They said any amount is fine, even if it is just 2 cents. I always found that strange, since they don't make too much commision on small purchases. Ah well, I can easily reach the 30 transactions with 2-cent purchases. :)))

Oh sure, I'm glad they do that rather than leaving you in debt, but just saying.

It's when they surprise you that sucks... my wife once had to spend 45 minutes trying to get the card reactivated with $400 worth of stuff from Costco sitting in her cart. At Costco.

  • Ati2, Chase verifies small purchases at first done over the Internet. Once they are used to seeing them, it's fine. But they also call on bigger ones, especially if it's an overseas purchase. Went through that with Vue since they bill from Paris. I think I had the same thing with American Express years ago. They wouldn't approve a purchase until I called. Chase doesn't have an issue with small PayPal purchase amounts, though, probably since it's verified with a PayPal password.

Will, that can be frustrating. I was with a friend buying a computer once and her bank made her dance. She ended up using another card or writing a check maybe.

Banks charge the sellers a per transaction fee over and above the percentage fee. When I had a merchant account, it was 30¢ per transaction, on top of the 2.9% "discount" fee. (I switched to a paypal payment gateway product that includes everything. And I believe the fees include a per transaction fee, too, though they only list the total fees for each transaction.)

  • @SiennaBlue, I had this happen to me last night, however it was just three items that totaled $29.80 (Breast Control, SY's snake (constrictor), and another item). It was "approved" this afternoon. There was no explanation, just a hold.

Its a random check. I've gotten one before as well. I've noticed CC are doing it too, especially if the card is new or its the first time you've used it on a significant charge. I just renewed 2 subs on a newer card and it let the first one through but blocked the second because it was within 10 minutes of the first. Took me all of about 10 minutes to log into my account online and approve it.

With PayPal's micro payment, my smallest charge is something like 5 cents. With bigger amounts, it gets bigger because of the percentage, but I'm quite happy with this. Anyway, I'm getting way off topic here... :)

Banks will also stop and freeze your card if it's found to be making transactions that are different then recently.  For instance, when my children received their trust fund, sent to their accounts, the bank froze it until I could go in with them to prove who we are and who was sending the money (was Canadian Govt that was sending the money) and the only reason this happened is because it was such a large amount which was not normal for the account.  Same thing happened right after I moved from the west coast to the east coast, while I was in transit, someone tried to make a near $400 purchase overseas and the bank stopped it till I could contact them about why my card wasn't working.  Also a smaller $37 transaction in Las Vegas that same day got stopped.

Every time you use your information for purchases, be that PayPal or banks or credit (including the pay as you go ones), you risk having your information ending up in someone elses hand, same with Identity theft.

I don't care if it's an inconvience, if it protects me in the long run, I can handle PayPal doing a check on my transactions.

  • Wow, thank you everyone!  It sounds like I've actually been lucky not to have this happen before now.  It still hasn't been released, but I'm hopeful it will be real soon.  I can understand the point of checking out lots of small purchases to protect against fraud.

@ acanthis-I really love that avatar.

@ Serene Night-The hyperlinks in my email from them didn't work either.

@ timmins.william-I've done the gift cards before and it is a good idea.  Like mjc1016, I'm very glad I was not taking a drink and I hope the kittens all went to good homes.  ;)

@ Ati2-I'm hoping that DAZ is used to having this happen as the receiver.  I'm also hoping they don't cancel the order.

@ Stormlyght-Interesting that the same thing happened to you on the same night with one of the same products in your cart.  Mine still hasn't gone through, yet, though.

@ Vhardamis; Kevin Sanderson, nicstt, L'Adair-Thanks for adding your imput, folks.  I can see, now, this seems to be pretty normal.

    @ cdemerit-I think I would've looked a bit more freaked out.  ;)

@ Faeryl Womyn/CalieVee-Those are definitely positive reasons for the holds.  I just wasn't sure about it because it was the first time it had happened to me and at a store I've shopped at countless times.  Thank you for sharing your experience.

I think I'll, actually, just blame DAZ, Zev0 and Sickleyield because I just couldn't pass up their awesome products.  Or any of the other amazing things I've picked up over the last month and a half.  wink

Before we left for a month in Europe this summer, we called out credit card companies to let them know we were travelling. Capital One grilled us about exactly which countries we were visiting, but BMO told us, "Oh, you don't have to tell us this any more!"

Guess which card worked once we got across the channel and which one didn't... Not a trick question. Only managed to make purchases in Austria with BMO, and as soon as we crossed the border, the card was declined everywhere. And CapOne ended up with an entire month of European vacation charged to it, no problem.

Edit: Also reminds me of the $4500 computer I was going to buy a few years ago to replace the old bucket of bolts I was running at the time. I had made the purchase and everything, but it never went through. Turned out in the Sony hack, my details had been taken and Sony had taken the initiative of informing my CC company -- before I even knew. I was severely PO'd. On the other hand, I was also spared from the trauma of paying for that machine -- which I really shouldn't have been buying --, and ended up getting a much, much cheaper (and slower) one. :D

  • YAY!  It finally went through!  Hopefully this thread will help any others who read it and go through this and don't know what the heck happened.  Happy rendering, everyone! laugh

@ Velvet Goblin-Dang!  That must have been quite a computer!  Still stinks you had to go through the Sony mess, though.

    Velvet: Jeebus.

Recently I had another problem with a card... wanted to buy a $300 printer at Staples. Card was declined. I thought 'maybe there's some daily limit I hit.' So I took some of the ink out of the cart, tried again at $260. Declined. Fuuu... My daughter _needed_ pictures printed out for school the very next day (I had earlier that day discovered that our rather old printer had not survived the big move).

So I'm debating what to do, get a fraud alert call. But of course they said 'Verify that the following charges were approved: $300 at Staples, $260 at Staples...'

And I'm thinking '... what do you mean by 'approved'? You didn't approve them, and I don't want to suddenly be charged $560 that I have to get recovered or something...'

Sooo... had to call. About 40 mins later, with my 7 year old son sitting in a Staples with people staring at me.
Finally got some stuff updated. Walked up... card declined. !#$%(&
At this point, I figured maybe there was some system issue with that card and that store. I've had issues like that before, where some store's system just didn't seem to 'get' some particular card.

At this point, eff it, went to ice cream shop with my son (he had been uncharacteristically calm and quiet through all of this, he deserved it)

Card declined. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH. I had cash, thankfully.

Got home. Turned out the person I talked to wasn't allowed to 'turn off' a fraud hold, and that I had been supposed to call the fraud line, not the customer help line. Not... that the first person had TOLD me.

So I got the hold turned off, went back to Staples, and finally got the f'in printer.

(And then it turned out my daughter's teacher extended the assignment a few days. mutter)

I've ad this issue with my bank card and PayPal with taking long trips and big purchases at Walmart. You end up having to call them and say WTH! as you said 45 minutes later being completely embarrassed it finally goes through.

  • Oso3DOso3D Posts: 15,085

The most annoying hold, esthetically speaking, was one where we asked 'why was a hold placed on the card?'

"Because there are a lot of fraudulent purchases in that zip code."

We were at an outlet mall near where we lived at the time. And I'm thinking... dude. There's an outlet mall.

I imagine at some future point we'll be using our phones to transfer payments rather than using CCs.

  • frank0314frank0314 Posts: 14,709

you can do that with an app on your iPhone i believe

I think that's a very scary thought. At least I can have "Please see Photo ID" on the back of my card, and most of the time it's noticed and I have to show my drivers license. (And I always thank the clerk for looking and asking. It upsets me when they don't bother to look!)

This is actually what I have been doing this past month.  I got great deals buying the DAZ GC (of course at the time they were offered at 10% and 20% discounts).  I think it will definitely help me to stay within my budget for the month and avoid any issues with paypal that otheres here have mentioned.

  • Oso3DOso3D Posts: 15,085

Yeah. I've tried to establish a 'leisure allowance' for myself, and the easiest way to do that is set X per month, get a gift card, and when that's gone, it's gone. If I have some to roll over, hey, that's cool. (With a wish list of 430 items, that doesn't happen so far)
