Why doesn't DS add the capability to create surface maps?
in The Commons
There seem to be a lot of questions in Nuts and Bolts about creating different surface maps for DAZ assets (normal, spec, bump, etc). Why doesn't DAZ include that function inside DS? LOE? Just don't want to?
Maybe this is an opportunity for someone to develop a product to do it for DS. Seems like at least weekly someone is asking about it.

From what? There are tools that will try to guess the control maps from a basic texture, is it something aliong those lines that you want?
hmmm, personally I dont see this question asked weekly.
My view would be that Daz isnt trying to be an asset creation tool. I think nowadays most people in 3D use whatever tool is fit for purpose. If someone was serious about creating assets like textures they would probably recognise the value of something like Substance Painter for texturing, which is very mature and which Daz would never be able to compete with. The only way I could see something like that coming to fruition in Daz ecosystem is if Daz buys out such a software and then integrates it. (But why bother integrating it if it works as a standalone?)
Or someone very bored decides to make a plugin.
Blender has pretty good options for procedural generation of textures and painting out masks etc, but this is really a byproduct of their more flexible shader system.
