Modo 3D discontinued, free to download (ten year offline license)

I know a lot of people use Blender in addition to a Daz or Carrara workflow but it is worth mentioning that Modo 3D has been announced to cease to exist, and the company sent out an email to users giving a farewell offline ten year license.  However the links are free for anyone to access and there is no "phoning home" or anything.  The license will expire after ten years but I guess that will be fine for many of you.  So go ahead and enhance your Daz or Carrara workflow.  NB:- Modo 16 is reckoned to be the most stable, even over version 17.

The EOL license file:

This will work for any of the following versions (Modo download links):-

Thank you for the notice.  Much appreciated.

  • DAZ used Modo for most if not all of their core figures

    Good to know !

But after investing heavily in Blender with extra tutes and Addons will have to be very good for me to change over. Will give it a try after I complete all of the Blender tutes I have lined up.

    Yes, and Much More!

It has 'procedural modeling' features. I remember wanting to make the jump and subscribe when they demonstrated that back when they did (it's all become blurry to me - so much going on these days) but, alas... it was waay over what little ol' me could afford.

Thanks for the tip! Still an unfortunate end for another well-regarded program.

The link is wrong, due to the double '.dmg' at the end. The correct link is:

    https://thefoundry.s3.amazonaws.com/products/modo/17.0v8/Modo17.0v8.207049-OSX.dmg

And thank you for the information yes

  • @ Elor, corrected now I hope.  Thank you for pointing this out..  smiley

The very final version of Modo was just released today.  Modo version 17.1.  No other release will follow..
    https://thefoundry.s3.amazonaws.com/products/modo/17.1v1/Modo17.1v1.251515-Release.msi
Get it before the link vanishes (use the same license download from first post).

Promo video, does look amazing to be fair..

    Thank you !

  • That is really sad. Wonder what is the reasoning. I guess software market is too saturated and it is difficult to keep up, especially with all the AI tools out there.
I guess their marketing team was a bit meh and didn;t make good decisions to make the pricing right. Don't know their last pricing model, but years ago, it was a bit pricey, but that was expected in that segment.
Good thing they made it available for the masses for ten years. That is very generous and thoughtful. That shows that open source tools a way more reliable in terms of having chances of survival. I couldn;t ever imagine Modo to be discontinued, it was upper class 3D tool. Bummer.

Thank you for sharing the info and links!
Enjoy using it for those who will :)

  • I've been using modo since I started. Its really very capeable and should stay revlevant for a few years to come.

Amazingly there is now a Permanent offline license for Modo.  Read their conditions, but it is on a public page and apparently fully offline Perpetual.

The download link will disappear at the end of Oct 2025..

I have not been following this since I am not a MODO user (a previous Lighrtwave user), but it sounds similar to the happy decision to make VUE free, a program that I do use and love.

They originally did it for ten years, but I am not clear how universal this is intended to be (it says it is only for those with an active maintenance arrangement)

For what it's worth, I downloaded it yesterday and installed it today and after activating it the foundry.lic file it generates lists "14-nov-2034" as the end date (which I believe would be 10 years after they decided to give it away). I've never owned the software nor had any agreements with them previously, and only created an account for the download yesterday.

Not sure what to think, website is here:

    https://www.bentley.com/software/e-on-software-free-downloads/

"we are offering free downloads and usage of VUE, PlantFactory, and PlantCatalog as perpetual versions to anyone interested in continuing to utilize these products and technologies! Simply download the product and acknowledge the new end-user-license-agreement (EULA) agreeing to using the software without support."  The word "maintenance" is not on that page.

I am still using my 2023 version which seems to be working fine.  Here is a short trailer with shots @ 5 and 13 seconds that I could not do any other way than VUE:

To clarify, I was talking about the Modo license, which was offered free for 10 years, not VUE. Sorry for any confusion.
