Setting up Iray lights in Viewport’s Texture-Shaded view?

Can someone recommend a logical way to set up Iray lights, using the viewport, when in the Texture-Shaded view?

OK, so I'm on an Intel iMac Pro system. (Filament is not available on Mac). When I'm setting up lights in a scene, my choices are either Texture-Shaded or Iray viewing modes. And if I use the preferred Iray View method, so I can see real-time adjustments, it's painfully pixelated and cumbersomely slow. So, I mostly use Texture-Shaded when placing my lights, dome positioning, etc.. What I'd prefer to do at this stage is to see the approximate effect of my Iray lights while I'm still in texture-shaded mode. Because navigation is so much quicker in Texture-Shaded mode. Then once I'm mostly set up in my scene, then switch over to Iray View to dial in the final adjustments on my light levels.
Is there a logical way to do this?

Texture Shaded just lacks too many features, especially in DS 4, to be viable as a lighting preview. You could always have a split Viewpane, or use a small Aux Vierport, as an Iray preview while working in Texture Shaded for placement - I have used a four-Viewport View ane  so I can see where the lights are from   sides and above, and using perspective view so thatI can have the Aux with the camera view to see the end result.

A product that might help you is Render Throttle for Iray (https://www.daz3d.com/render-throttle-for-iray).  I bought it two years ago and use it a lot to have an Iray preview that is not as heavy on computer resources as are the default Iray preview settings.  The product is a set of scripts that allow you to change Iray preview and render settings (Low, Medium, High) with one click.  While neither the store page nor the Read Me page (http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/read_me/index/50257/start) refer to use on a Mac, the vendor’s YouTube video on the store page shows him demonstrating the product on a Mac screen.

There is also a Render Throttle for 3Delight product (https://www.daz3d.com/render-throttle-for-3delight) which I bought last year.

The Iray Drawstyle can be adjusted in Draw Settings, separately  from the final Render Settings.

Another idea - one that I use all the time:

    • In render settings > Progressive Rendering, turn the Max Samples down to something small, like 50 or even 100
    • In Render Settings > Filtering, turn on Post Filter (Turn on availablitiy and then the follow two options that appear afterwards)
    • If you're final output is high resolution, try turning that doen as well - I use 720p

Granted, Iray is still working hard to give great results, so it can be a bit sluggish in the viewport. So if I'm only setting the lighting, I group (Create > New Group) things that are not absolutely essential until I get somewhat close, and hide that group from view while adjusting.

As Richard says above, look over your Draw Settings. There are many ways in there to optimize performance while in Viewport mode.
