eye shadows too dark

in Technical Help (nuts n bolts)

is there a way to not have these hard shadows on iray with a distant light, without having to add spotlights or whatever?

    A distant light is harsh, and unrealistic (there is usually light scattering from the environment etc.)

    and what can i do to fix it other than putting spotlights, its the same with sun sky

    With the sun-sky, you can soften the shadows by increasing the sun disk scale to 10 or higher.  You may need to increase the sun disk intensity after you soften the shadows.

    If you use a distant light instead, you can't soften the shadows, but you can lighten them by using a light colored HDRI.
