Hi. It's been quite a while since I used Daz, years in fact. A lot has changed. What I am looking for is some suggestions.
For female chracters I mostly used V4 . I had a lot of stuff for her. From Daz as well as freebies. There are a lot of new characters now. I'd like to find a new go to character. I am looking for a good model that has a lot of freebies availble. I don't think IRay is an option rightnow. I have an old graphics card and rendering in CPU takes forever for just a simple figure. So I'm not concered how the figure looks using Iray.
Any suggestions?

I would recommend you play around with G2F, that way you get to learn the flexibility of the Genesis system. You only need to get one product, namely, http://www.daz3d.com/victoria-4-for-genesis-2-female, and you can put all your V4 clothing, and V4 skins on her.
Ideally I would say experiment with the stuff that comes from with Daz Studio. There are 3 sets of Genesis Starter Essentials, for Genesis 1, 2 and 3. Each has a femine version of the base character. Once you have seen the difference between the 3 newer generations of DAZ 3D figures then you can decide which you prefer, and which to start adding extras to.
As with V4, Basic Morph Packages are needed to get the most variety out of each one.
Well, you could go to the pharmacy and pick up a bottle of DAZinol... It used to be prescription only, but DAZ pressured some influential politicians and when that didn't work, they begged a lot and now you can get it anywhere... Really, pet stores sell it now... But basically it's like a reverse of Methadone, instead of helping you kick the habit, it helps ease you back into addiction instead.
Well, you know about iRay, so aside from that and the DAZinol and the serial killer who was never caught, who was stalking the forums, nothing really has changed.
I'm making all that up... There was no serial killer (but some guy stabbed a box of Captin Crunch), there is no such thing as iRay, and DAZinol is something I just made up.
Wait... Is iRay real? Or was it DAZ Studio Holovision 9.3 that I made up... I have to start writing myself notes... iRay is probably real, because either a lot of people are going along with that joke and making fake products, or its real...
Oh well, welcome back!!
I like any product that eases you back into addiction. There's an untapped market in there somewhere.
and I never stabbed a box of cereal. I did fling waffle at a charging moose. There was an engraved image of St. Francis on the waffle, I may have made, I may have made it with a crayon. In retrospect it looked a lot like David Hassehoff, I may have over emphasized the chiseled pectorals of a 79 pound middle age balding Italian saint. Not surprisingly it was ineffectual with such a large moose. It's possible he was still sore about his excommunication. These were tumultuous times for both Catholic wildlife and Knight Rider script writers.
You can use Iray - not to be confused iRay which is some kind of Apple product that blinds ala' 3 stooges eye-poke then fills your hard drive with Bridget Mendler covers of Ronnie James Dio era Black Sabbath. Iray via CPU will give the same results as video card, it's slower, exponentially so when you compare with gradually faster and insanely more expensive Nvidia GPU's. When you work with different rendering engines even in the same software there tends to be differences with surfaces and lighting so there will be a re-learning curve to some degree, some thing will be identical or nearly identical to what you may already know.
There is also LuxRender via Reality and Luxus and if that was not enough a free Daz Studio to Blender Cycles render in the freebies you can play with now.
If you have a lot of Generation 4, Havos has a great suggestion. Chohole does too. And if I'm not mistaken, haven't they added to/changed a few of the essential packages? There's really a lot of nice stuff in there.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm sorry to hear about the Captain. He wil be missed.
I am liking the idea of using G2 so I can use my V4 stuff too.
And now there's more render options? Which is good I guess, but my head is going to explode right now. I guess I will dabble in a few of them to see how they work.
I forgot about Morphs. There's the Genesis Evolution: Morph Bundle here. But I don't have 40 bucks right now. Is that all there is? I know there's a lot of character morphs out there for free but is it possible to get basic morphs as a freebie?
I don't have the link, but search for DieTrying182's morphs for Genesis on ShareCG. It has a lot of handy morphs and is 100% free, and I use it all the time. Not sure of such free morph packs exist for G2 - I've pretty much settled on Genesis as my figure of choice.
I just dug up those links recently...

While I have a bunch of other morph packs, these are INCREDIBLY useful in combination with them. There are two nose tilt morphs that nothing else I have includes, plus some aureole stuff and other finicky stuff. It's amazing.
OMG thanks, you guys are so great!
Run!
My second piece of advice is: go trawling for free stuff. There's a MASSIVE amount of free content available on sharecg, renderosity, and scattered all over; any time you want 'something', go check if there's a free model available somewhere. Also, shaders and textures.
A lot of textures I have are just random pictures I've gathered online, though you have to be very careful that it's free for use -- if you aren't sure, best to skip it.
If you find yourself in need of a lot of textures, I'd recommend getting FilterForge on sale for $60 when you can. There are 13,000+ free mutable textures and filters available through it.
If you find yourself in need of random objects (hollow pipes, vaulted ceilings, whatever), there are a variety of free and cheap modeling solutions you might look at. If you have the patience to learn an incredibly hard UI, Blender is apparently great (and free). I ended up buying Carrara, on sale for $60, and I find it does most of what I want handily.
Check Daz store daily; there are often free items, and over time I've gathered a LOT of rather useful items. I personally find the PC membership worthwhile, for the handful of items you can get with the coupon for free, extra free items, and sale prices on lots of stuff. (Some people prefer to wait until whatever they want is at a better sale price, but you might find yourself waiting a very long time/forever for that)
It is wilmap free clothes page: https://www.wilmapsdigitalcreations.co.uk/introduction.php
Lot of free cloth for Genesis 1, 2 and 3
Thanks. I thought I remembered Daz having free stuff but I couldn't find it. Do they have a freebie section in the store anymore?
I was really thinking of learning to make my own content. In the past I mostly used Daz for creating a refrence for drawing and paintings. But there's so much more you can do with it these days. And now that I have developed an alergy to paint, I think it's a great option for creating artwork directly in the program. The one thing I got frustrated with last time was having to hunt for certian things. I mean there is so much avaible and it's great, but last night i was looking for a certain type of dress in a certain color, and it would be great if I could also make things that I can not find so easy. Plus I've been fooling around creating objects for SIms 3 and I had a lot of fun doing that. I use Wings and Milkshape. I imagine I can transfer that knowlege to Blender. It seems like the better option since I hear that now you can use it to render Daz.
The old DAZ Weekly Freebie Archive is gone, it died when DAZ switched forum software about two... (Or is it three?) years ago. DAZ does sorta have a freebie section in the store... Go to the store and usually on the sliding banner, on the last rightmost promo is the link... You can also do a store search for the "weekly" freebies, which seem to be bi-weekly... They more or less refresh every other Tuesday... To find them go to the store page, just under the second sliding banner, you should see the "Filters" section set your "Sort By" view on the right, from the default "New Arrivals" to "Price- Low to High", they should then show up. Also remember to check the "Hide Items I Already Own" option, to reduce the confusion and make life easier.
Also, in the Freebies forum, here at DAZ there is a thread called "Limited Time Freebie Email Message Alert", subscribe to it or check in on it frequently to find some great freebies...
Also, if you are in the freebie forum, look up mCasual's threads, he (or she) is the one who made the script to alway you to render DAZ scenes in Blender's Cycles renderer...

Once you start to use the genesis characters, you will feel the need to buy all of the cool add-ons for them. I keep thinking that I need to work with Vicky 4, but I am having so much fun with the new genesis models and they look excitingly different and maybe even better than Vicky 4 (Sorry, Vicky!). When you are able too, try Iray...it produces some fine renders.
