Tags generated when updating metadata not working in search

mmdestinymmdestiny Posts: 193

I had to rename some folders in my library.  Doing so wiped the metadata of everything in the folders.  Ok fine, whatever, I regenerated it.

However, when the metadata automatically generates tags by parsing the filename, those words are not working in search.

I'm not sure what to do.  There's no way I can manually type out tags for hundreds of files.

The same such tags priorly generated automatically for the files in the folders I DIDN'T have to rename are fine.  And they're like the same format.  fu_bar_pose.duf and all three of "fu" "bar" and "pose" work in search for the untouched files, not the ones I had to update.

Renaming folders in Content Library don't wipe the metadata but just turn the metadata as Orphaned References... (as the white-framed exclamation mark on the thumbnail of files...) and it doesn't remove Userwords in Tag either ~~

So, how did you regenerate the metadata... ?

The folders were sorted by type and gender, so just Edit Metadata... Select All, set Type, Set Category, Set Compatibility, done.

Okay, got it ~ So, after you renamed the folders, as I said, you just made all existing metadata Orphaned (incl. Content Type, Category, Compatibilities, and original vendor words / auto words of couse) ... The records of metadata are still in cms database but just with broken data links to the files ~~

Then, as for auto words, you have to re-enter the original ones in Tag or enter Userwords in Content DB Maintenance (by Edit Metadata).

That's what I'm saying though.  The keywords are back now after what I did in Edit Metadata, but they don't "work" for anything in these folders.  I.E. If I look at the tag list for any of these files, they will list the keywords, but if I search the keywords, the files won't appear in the result list.

What keywords are there in the Tag, better post a screenshot... And how did you filter the keyword ? by typing in key::xxxxx ?

    @crosswind

Image1: old untouched file/folder.  These were all auto-generated when the file was created initially.  Every keyword listed there is found in search.  (note by the way that I have NEVER had to use any wildcards or descriptors in search like key:: .  Any keyword that appeared in the list always worked as is.)

Image2: moved file/foder.  These are the keywords generated after redoing the metadata.  None of these keywords pulled from the filename show in search, even with your key:: added in.

Oh, so even if they look like that in the 2nd screenshot, you should be able to filter them out. Pls try this way... I just reproduce a case like yours:

    - Type in "xxxxxx to filter (screenshot 1)
    - Or type in
    "keyword::xxxxxxx to filter (screenshot 2)

See if that works for you ?

Dangit...searching the FULL filename with extension will return in the search.  But none of the components of the filename return separately like they always had before, which completely defeats the purpose of naming my thousands of files with the keywords built into the filenames.

The only real difference between my two screenshots is that the untouched files that work had autogenerated not only "my_cool_filename.duf" BUT ALSO "my_cool_filename" as keywords when they were created, whereas the altered files where I had Edit Metadata regenerate the keywords automatically only generated the one with ".duf" at the end.  Perhaps it can't parse it if it has ".duf"

It's looking like my only option is to go through all these files and add the string by hand without the .duf :(  (and figure out some other way of reorganizing the rest of these folders so it doesn't happen again.)

You have to type in the full keyword, no matter with or without .DUF, i.e. type in the full string.

I myself never rename folders or rebuilt folder structures...Maybe there're some other ways I'm not aware of that can make what you want. blush

What I'm saying is what you describe is not what I have experienced at all for years for any of my files except this one folder incident.

For every other folder in my library, if I have a file called "my_cool_pose_with_a_long_name.duf," I can type in any of the following in search and it will find the file (and I didn't have to do anything to get this, this behavior comes straight out of the box when I save a file).

    • my
    • cool
    • pose
    • with
    • a
    • long
    • name
    • _  (lol)

So you can see why this is a big frustration now that all files in the affected folder no longer act this way.  I will have manually add those keywords one at a time to each file.

Ah, I have to say that's a different way of fitlering. You just type in a partial word within the full name of a DUF file, then of course you can filter out that file because you just filter by using a Name rather than a Keyword. They're different things.

    Pls check this document: http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/referenceguide/interface/panes/smart_content/advanced_filtering/start

to find what's the difference in between filtering by Keyword and Name.

So I guess the question becomes - is there any way to force daz to repopulate "my_cool_filename" (without the .duf) in the tag list for all files in a folder without A.) manually typing them or B.) Resaving the preset (which frankly would take longer than just typing it and since there's settings to be ticked on each one, I can't use a batch process)

Well, in my experience with DS and cms database, there's no other better and safer way except for: Doing it from very beginning, i.e. after you rename folders/ reorganize folder structure, modify the file path accordingly in metadata DSX file(s) (in runtime\support folder) of the relevant products (e.g. by using Notepad++, Replace All...), then Re-Import Metadata. In this way, you'll have all original metadata fully intact ( incl. Type, Cate, Compatibilities, Autowords, etc. etc.), and don't need to Edit Metadata at all.
Edit: If you want to go for this way, suggest you use this script: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/618456/add-to-smart-content so as to import single DSX file

Actually there's another way: directly replace the path in cms database... which is even faster but that'll requires postgreSQL DBA skills and knowledge of dzcontent... not really recommended ~~

Well for what it's worth, one of my talents is finding useless keystroke shortcuts for things.  If I open Edit Metadata for each affected folder, go to the Userwords section and select all files to add them to the list, there's a little trick where if you have a file in the list selected hitting ctrl+c copies the filename (no .duf).  If I then hit my "Menu" key (that usually just acts as RMB) and enter 2x it brings up the text box to add userwords. Ctrl+v enter, and that's one record. Arrow key down, repeat. So 7 key strokes rince repeat until I'm done with the folder lol.

Can probably program a keyboard macro to do that for me lol.

Ohohohoho I'm a lifelong musician.  Finger dexterity is my superpower.  I plowed through about 100 files per minute last night.
