renders finish fast but look fuzzy? [Solved]
I'm having a problem where my renders for this scene complete running, but they don't look finished.
They go to the save option in under 10ish minutes, but they just look sort of fuzzy and awful (see attached). You can see it most clearly in the center figure's face.
Using the Skies of iRadiance SunsetC, if relevant.
I've had these two characters (and two others) in this location with different skies and they've turned out fine.
I'm pretty sure this is a settings issue... but I'm not good at understanding how things under the hood work yet, for a lot of stuff. Advice on which setting I need to tweak?

In Render Settings > Progressive Rendering, what are then you're stop criterias Max sample, Max time, rendering quality?
You can also look in your log (Help > Troubleshooting > View Log, to see what caused the render to stop.
Max Samples: 15000
Max Time (secs): 600
Rendering Quality: 1.00 (enabled/on)
I looked at the log (thank you, I didn't even know that was there) and at the end it says:
Iray [INFO] - IRAY:RENDER :: 1.0 IRAY rend info : Received update to 00064 iterations after 10:05.605.
Iray [INFO] - IRAY:RENDER :: 1.0 IRAY rend progr: Maximum render time exceeded.
...which would mesh with the 600 seconds... did that get changed somehow with the sky? Because I've had other scenes I've done where it didn't shut itself off until the 2 hour(ish) mark...
Going to go check that now. Thank you. That was very educational. I had no idea that was there.
Do you think the max samples and rendering quality settings are off, too?
Daz has a habit of remembering rendering settings from previous scenes, which I find to be a nuisance as a product scene will have been set up to that particular scene and the creator's preferences.
Options, if you don't already use these:
I didn't know I could do either of those! (...though also in fairness I didn't know where to go to mess with the settings, so it probably wouldn't have done any good.) I will definitely look at figuring out what settings work best for me and saving them to a subset for future use. Thank you for the tip!
If you set the Max Time to 0 but leave the Max Samples at 15000(or higher), you can cancel the render at any time you feel that the image is at the quality you want.
The post denoiser can make smeary images just turn it off and see if thats the issue
And also, don't forget to check if your Camera has DoF (Depth of Field) turned on!!! Your subject might be out of the focal plane. <shrugs> Worth a look.
I always have trouble with renders not turning out looking really 'finished', so to say, when I leave the 'render quality' setting enabled at all. It caps your max samples and also other things afaik. It makes more sense to turn it off and set things individually.
A good idea is if you have a commercial render setting you really liked, have a look at the settings so you get a better understanding what works well yor you and your machine.
@Phoenix1966 Okay, wouldn't have guessed that one. I would have figured it would just immediately time out with it set to 0. Thanks for the info!
@pitmatic I have no idea what that is, but will look into it! Thanks!
@gogger Good suggestion! It's the wrong kind of fuzzy for that, though... which would be more apparent if the forum had actually included the picture post I uploaded, and I now see isn't there. Weird internet issues today, though (some digging and utility work going on locally) so that's probably why.
@tsroemi I'm really in love with the ROG Red Crow Inn and hobbit hole (can't remember the official name) usability, but I'm not sure if that's also some witchery with the textures or aome other way it's constructed. Will have to look when I get back to my machine.
Look at all those responses; what a great community!
I know, right? The fabulous folx here are the only reason my brains are still in my head and not splattered all over my desk from a year and a half of beating my head against it.
SOLVED!!!
I set the max time to 0 and just let it go until it decided it was done. It took forever, but when it hit 100% it looked quite nice! So the timeout was definitely the issue, and now not only do I know how to look for and fix that, I know a bunch of other stuff about render settings. Much appreciated to everyone who contributed to my education.
Also, when I went in to mark the title as solved, there was my picture that I KNEW I had uploaded. Turns out there's now an option underneath for "insert" or "delete" and I hadn't clicked the former, so it just sat there and didn't show up. Pretty sure that's new, so heads up.
