Just got a notice about 3Delight being retired but the instructions sort of come to a dead end so not sure if I can manually download DS 4.24 and all it's components. Here is the notice:
A Note About 3Delight
As Daz Studio continues to evolve , we’re also saying goodbye to some legacy features. With a pending update to Daz Studio 4.24, the 3Delight render engine will be officially phased out at the end of this year due to the conclusion of our licensing agreement.
We understand that some users still rely on 3Delight for specific projects or workflows, and we want to ensure a smooth transition.
Here’s what you need to do:
- Back up your version of Daz Studio 4.24
- Save any 3Delight-related plug-ins or add-ons you rely on
- Consider saving important 3Delight scenes or assets for future use
To ease your transition, below are some instructions on how to back up your current Studio 4.24 copy.
- In Install Manager, in the Settings Menu (cog icon, top-right), click “Basic Settings…”

- This will cause the “Basic Settings” dialog to appear

- In the “Basic Settings” dialog, click the “Package Archive” hyperlink

- This will cause an OS file browser window to appear, pre-navigated to the folder that holds installation packages

- In the OS file browser window, on Windows enter *DazStudio424* into the Search field, on macOS enter DazStudio424 (no asterisks) into the Search field
This search name brought up nothing for me, I had to manually type out DAZ Studio and all those packages came up - This will filter the view to display only files that have “DazStudio424” in their name
- Copy the files that have “DazStudio424” in their name to a safe backup location
How does one do that from the IM? I see no way to do that!
This phase-out will only affect versions going forward – your backed-up copy of 4.24 will continue to function as expected.
Thanks

You don't copy the files from DIM, you copy them from the package archive folder on your PC (that you should have opened earlier) to another folder.
The problem with their method is that if you tell DIM to delete package after install there won't be anything in the package archive folder....
Ah and that's the problem. I always have it deleted because it just takes up room on my hd. So then the question is how does one obtain copies of DS 4.24 to keep safe?
Does anyone know how this will affect purchased assets themselves? The stated reason for removing 3Delight is "due to the conclusion of our licensing agreement."
You can download the zips from the product library section of the store too.
Another option if you want to batch download them is to use DIM and play with the settings :
Also, is there any proposed replacement coming for 3Delight?
OK. Went the long way around. I uninstalled DS 4.24 and it's four components, GOZ, Photoshop Bridge, Dynamic Cloth Contols and Decimator and reinstalled but unchecked the box to delete after install. I now have my files. Used to be we could manually download all that from our library. I guess they nixed that.
It won't affect your purchased items, you just won't be able to render with 3DL anymore in newer versions of DS.
It's already the case in DS2025 alpha, which doesn't have 3DL included : the products themselves still load, materials still apply, and the "3DL to Iray" automatic conversion for standard shaders still exists so you can render them with Iray or Filament for example.
Most 3DL items will likely remain available in the store since they can work with Iray with a bit of fiddling. Products like custom 3DL shaders (eg pw shaders) or lights (eg uber lights) won't work anymore since they only worked with 3DL, so those might be retired.
You still can, search the "product library" section for 4.x and you'll find all files for DS: https://www.daz3d.com/downloader/customer/files#prod_13176
What steps would I have to take in order to successfully create a backup of DS 4.24 or earlier? There are so many ideas being thrown in, but I can't determine which is the right method. It's very confusing.
EDIT: Scratch that. I did click to link to download the 4.24 version. But I'd like to ask, does the latest 4.24 on said link have 3Delight?
You could also unisntall DS and plug-ins, then redownload and install without the delete option checked, then (since you don't want to keep the zips) just move them from the Downloads folder to your back-up location - uninstaling won't affect settings at all.
In order to have the latest Daz Studio version with a functioning 3delight render engine,
Go to daz3d.com > My Account > Product Library > Search for "Daz Studio" > DAZ Studio 4.x Pro
Download the *.exe files and store them on a safe hard drive for EVER!
Make an entire copy of all your DIM, including the Download directory onto an external SSD. Then have another SSD to back up that SSD. Only have your DIM folders. I am using a 2TB SSD and it still has 1.09TB Free of 1.86TB (note: I have about 9200 DIM DAZ Install Files aka Products from the DAZ 3D Store saved locally on that SSD and they are installed locally on another 2TB SSD as my DAZ Content Library).
DAZ3D said that you will be able to have installed concurrently the last version of DAZ Studio Pro 4 Release and DAZ Studio Pro 6 Release. The 4 & the 6 refer to the version of QT used to develop DAZ Studio's GUI.
Qt, not QT - and it does a lot more than just supply the UI
The current build still includes 3Delight, the blog is advanced notice of a forthcoming update that will not so that you can back the current one up.
only RSL, it was the switch to OSL that stopped daz from includign later versions of 3Delight since all native materials and shaders would have needed redoing.
Ber in mind that this isn't a general solution as not al applications and plug-ins have stand-alone installers that can be downloaded from the product library.
I apologise if this has already been answered (and I've overlooked it), but will products with 3Delight shaders still load into Daz Studio? And will they still be able to download in the future - Or is everything 3delight-related being nuked?
I haven't got a HDD big enough to store GBs upon GBs of old content.
I always saw Filament as 3Delight's replacement.
The only thing which will disappear is the option to render with 3DL.
Products with 3DL shaders will still load, and the automatic conversion from standard 3DL shaders to Iray still exists, with the same limitations as when rendering a 3DL product in Iray nowadays (it can't do anything with custom 3DL shaders).
It's already like that in DS2025 alpha.
Thanks for clearing that up
Yes, it could be... But they don't want to make it a fully functional render engine.
At the moment Filament (as I know) lacks of proper lights/shadows management, reflective surfaces and emissive materials. It's super fast and quite good for toon/Anime... But we need something more.
In 3Delight I can do a lot of things that are impossible in both IRay and Filament, that's the worst part.
I don't believe Daz has given any indication that Filament is seen as a 3Delight replacement.
as I was reading this thread I just got a full screen reminder that Windows 10 is ending support which just confused the hell out of me.
3Delight in Studio did not allow some of the deeper abilities of the engines capabilities, i don't know if it was a licensing thing or a learning curve. Sad to see it go but it's well over 25 years old
3Delight has had updates (I don't know if it is still being updated, but I haven't seen othrewise) - the problem was they dropped support for RSL and used only OSL, which would have made existing sahders and materials redundant (essentially it would have been a new render engine).
.. use 3DeLite most of the time ..
Last 3Delight version compatible with Daz Studio (RSL) was v12.5.8 from November 2017 - but DAZ did not even update to this version and kept 12.0.27 that was released already end of 2015, since Daz Studio 4.9 until 4.24...
We don't know whether that was Daz choosing not to update or the developers not offering that update.
What date does DAZ3D's license for IRAY expire? What's IRAY going to be replaced with?
While I am sure there is an expiry date for legal reasons I don't think there is any plan not to renew it.
