Stonemason - no more Poser support ?

Dear Stonemason!

I'm a great fan of your products. I really love what you do and think they are certainly the best objects/scenes we can bought here and in other stores.

But... I'm a Poser fan. I'm writing scripts for Poser and won't leave it. The last products you made are DAZ | Studio only. Ok, you're right, I can import OBJ in any 3D applications.
I tried it. I bought NWX Section 18 - it's an amazing product. But it's a nightmare to bring it in Poser. Once you were able to load ALL the 32 OBJ files in Poser (and after resizing), you will have to work on the materials. And there are so many materials (128 materials, without counting the Preview material).

I can understand that DAZ|Studio, with the IRay, is attractive and give very nice results. But I remember you were able to make also incredible renders with the Poser's FireFly render engine.

So... will you continue supporting Poser ? Or is it finished ?

Thanks for reading,

Basil

DAZ Studio will allow you to export a Poser CR2 and it will create the obj files along with it.

Isn't that what the DSON Importer for Poser is for? I've never used it myself, so I could be completely wrong.

  • DzFire: I don't think you can export as CR2. It's not a figure. It's only props. I just tried it and it doesn't work.

Esemwy: I also tried the DSON Importer for Poser. Unfortunately, it doesn't work. If you check product pages, if it's DSON compatible, you will see something like this: Compatible Software:DSON Importer for Poser, DAZ Studio 4.8

  • You can also tell the DSON Importer to (try to) load a .duf file with Dimesion3D's script http://d3d.sesseler.de/index.php?software=poserpython&product=dson_loader

  • DSON importer for Poser creates more problems that it's worth.  Most of the new products now cannot even create a Poser Companion File without adding errors to it that result in inability to transfer anything into Poser.  I could name a number of new products sold here where it was virtually impossible to convert to Poser in anything other than an OBJ file.  Collada exports have worked in the past for me, but with PA's creating very large models where the props are built into the model (no moveable props), it takes a long time to load.  Some items after imported with DSON arrive with pieces missing in both props and clothing.

I actually had pretty good luck in converting Stonemason's Streets of London.  It took about three days and a few tries.  The best way to import into Poser was to have DSON create a PZ3 scene then use that to create the separate buildings.  In some cases the buildings lost their textures so I had to create Mat files from the PZ3.  That's a big city so it's not easy moving around.

I could still use DAZ Studio, but I prefer to create my scenes in Poser since I've been using it for years.

Hi Semidieu,Unfortnately I no longer support Poser, don't even have it installed anymore..there are obj's included which can be imported to any other app,not the best option I know but it was the best compromise I could offer.

    Cheers

    Hi Stefan,

That's certainly the badest news I read for the whole year. I do understand that you have to make some choices (a bad choice to my opinion). But you certainly have some good reasons... And I'll respect it.

To be honest, your products where the products that brings me to browse the Daz3D website. I will really miss your products.

If I can ask only one thing: can you provide a grouped version of the scene (one OBJ file with everything pre installed): this would make importing in Poser much easier...

    Sincerely,

    Basil

The experience you mention, about having to load the multiple .objs and then setup the materials, resize things, etc. is a good example of the reason many vendors have stopped supporting poser.  It's a lot of work to setup files for a different program, and unfortunately the returns are not often worth the extra work.  I'm not trying to speak for Stonemason, just speaking from my own experience.

I have found that the .obj exporter from Daz studio is quite good with collecting both textures and a proper material reference file. However one needs a modern feature rich .obj importer in the RECEIVING application with scale setting options and The ability to “point” it to a specific texture folder before import I use Maxon Cinema4D for all of my animation renders along with a powerful third party .obj importer plugin called “Riptide pro” With this I am rendering fully textured animated genesis figures in C4D via the MDD/obj exporter from DS aniMate 2. The people who refuse to adopt tools outside of poser should accept the reality of their choice and begin to lobby the remaining developers in the poser community to make better utilization of posers native Python scripting To increase posers compatibility with the forward moving standards being set by others outside the poser community ..the world will not stand still for poser.

  • I'm also SO sorry to see you leave the Poser market. No hard feelings, just sad. :-(

Why is that easier than individual obj's?..PhilC has a batch importer script if it's just dealing with importing so many

  • You'right, but... I too have a script that imports multiple objs. The problem comes in the scaling. Importing in default size, it make the objs so huge that you need to scale everything down to 3-4 percents. And if you tell to scale down while importing, it places the obj in the wrong position. I am able to import and scale everything in less than 10 minutes, but I'm using 2 different scripts to do this correctly (one to import all objs, one to group all objs to a parent) then scaling manually. Maybe I would need to make some changes to my script to import it better. But you're right, it's not necessary to include a full preset scene. The main problem is in the materials.. I do understand, and agree, that Poser needs some better cross-application compatibility or at least more flexibility... I just want to buy a product and be able to use it. Am I lazy? Maybe a little... But when you get a product, you get it to use it... Not to take lots of time to make it work... Again, I do not want to make application comparison or say one is better than the other. This is not the question here... Stefan, continue your beautiful work and the only thing I can hope is, maybe one day, you will support again Poser. Sincerely, Basil
  • Try using the Dimension3D script - it should at least load the items at the correct scale and location.

  • It truley is a shame, I still use poser myself, never had any luck with the Dyson importer. Stonemason is still the BEST. I'll try the scripts everyone is suggesting.

Thanks for asking this question that has been on my mind for a while.

  • Thanks all for answering. I'll work on Section 18 and see if I can bring a good result with it :)
