Does GenX not work anymore?

Joe.CotterJoe.Cotter Posts: 3,362

Trying to use GenX to migrate some character morphs but the documentation says to use a "source" button on the transfer tab that doesn't even exist. It also says I can browse for the character or drag and drop, neither of which load a character into the workspace. The product still shows up in the store so it would seem it should work.

Ok, so reading the documentation it says that supported Genesis figures are loaded using the "source" button. The "drag and drop" and "Load Figure" methods are for poser figures. Since I'm not seeing any "source" button, it would seem there is no way to load a Genesis figure. This is frustrating since I bought all of the GenX products specifically to do this transfer years ago but life got in the way and am only now getting around to trying to do this. Was this a massive waste of money or is there some way to get this to work?

You don't need a figure loaded into the scene to use GenX, all the transferring is done behind the scenes. Just make sure all your GenX addons are installed and you're good to go.

Thanks but that does not help... All the GenX addons are installed... You did not address anything I mentioned as being my problem.

To transfer one or several morphs, you do the following steps:
    1. Load a source figure. This is the figure to transfer the morphs from. It is either one of the
supported Poser legacy figures, or one of the supported Genesis figures. Installed Genesis
figures can be selected with the Source button. Poser figures are loaded with Load Figure or
by drag'n'drop from the DS4 content library or an external file manager.

Normally, one has to take some action to get a product to do something and the action the tutorial suggests is not possible. That was what my initial comment was saying. I attached screen shots and the relevant instructions from the documentation to clarify.

I tried the "drag and drop" and the "load figure" button but neither of those did anything. Evidently it seems they only work for Poser figures as the documentation (as shown above) says. Without being able to load a figure, there are no morphs to save and the buttons to do that are greyed out. Also, I tried loading the figure into the scene just to see if there was a way to get the morphs to load that way but had no success there either.

Hahaha, here I was, genuine GenXer, reading the heading and getting ready to get all worked up: What does this guy mean, not working, I'm literally ready to go to work right at this moment ... And then I started reading. Oy, good that I checked! blush laugh

Don't know much about the DAZ GenX, I'm afraid, but do hope you'll find someone who does, OP.

Firstly, have you successfully installed the latest version of this product ? https://www.daz3d.com/genesis-generation-x2

Also check About Installed Plugins.... make sure it is the same version as what I showed below.  Then you should be able to find the Source and List in GenX dialogue box.

Yes, I had the correct version installed. I did of course double check with your question and that did lead me to the actual issue. It ends up, I had bought the original GenX and the X2 version and DAZ had automatically installed both. When I brought up the GenX pane, it loaded v1. There was no option to select which to load and it should have loaded the newer version, or for that matter not even loaded the outdated one when there was a newer version in my list. That is a major fail on the part of DAZ studio. I was going crazy trying to figure out what was going on. Tyvm for your help. :)

my humblest of humble apologies. I thought you meant you were loading a figure in the viewpoint as you do with XTransfer and was clarifying that you don't. And it is so many years since I started using genX that I forgot there had ever been two versions. Crosswind never forgets anything fortunately. Once again, my apologies.

Daz [Install Manager/Studio/downloads] don't automatically install plug-ins (except, semi-automatically, the base product bundles for DS and hexagon, and even those can be opted out of).

Ok, I must have installed from DIM then and mistakenly installed both versions. It is still an issue that the older version takes precedence over the newer, but it's good to know that if one is aware enough to not load both versions (can easily slip with all of the things one is loading in a reinstall) that it shouldn't be an issue. Thank you for the clarification.

I don't have GenX but just GenX2. I know that GenX2 is not intalled by DIM but by an executable installation file (18321_GenesisGenerationX2forDAZStudio45Win64bit_2.1.1_ds.exe). You can find the file on its product download page. (https://www.daz3d.com/downloader/customer/files#prod_18321).

I suppose that GenX should be installed in the same way...

So, I would suggest that you go to the folder: C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4\Uninstallers. Check if you can find an uninstaller of GenX. If you can, uninstall it. Then completely re-install GenX2. Then try again.

Also, this way may also work: Go to this folder:C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4\plugins\. Search by "genx", see if you can find more than one DLL file. If you can, I believe one of them is GenX, another one is GenX2 (d3dGenX2.dll). Make sure DS is closed, then delete the former (DLL file of GenX). Then relaunch DS and try again.

Actually @Crosswind my GenX2 was installed through DIM - I have the manifest file from 2017 to prove it. I notice that the product page still lists DIM as an install method, but also that the Product Library does not show the DIM installer, so something is wrong there I think.

(Edit to fix typos - it's so hot here today that my fingers are constantly sticky!)

Melanie is correct. I installed it by DIM. This isn't a question, it's a statement of fact. In my case, I mistakenly installed both and DS for some reason decided to prioritize the older version.

I bought it in 2019 and I'd never seen any package could be downloaded via DIM but only an executable installation package. Besides, it could be installed via Daz Connect.

Well, if you guys installed it via DIM, you should be able to locate an installed GenX or GenX2 in DIM > Installed tab. The the solution should be very simple. Uninstall both of them. Then only install GenX2.

I'm not sure what you mean here, Connect cannot be used to install plug-ins (or anything that isntalls like software)

DS did what the plug-ins told it to, if possible.

This all sounds familiar. Note that Genesis Generation X2 only installs for the Studio general release, not the Studio beta version; that takes a bit of finessing. Read more in Gen X plugins not working.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I cant load an exported genesis character cr2 file this is the error I get.

Am I exporting wrong, or does Genesis generation X no longer work? I'm attemting to transfer to a Genesis 3 figure.

    GenX - Loading figure: Character
    Loading figure file ...

thats a DSON importer Poser file for Poser up to 11

you need the DAZ Studio duf file not the cr2 version

GenX only supports DAZ legacy cr2 figures like Victoria 4

GenX2 is looking for a cr2 file for Load Figure, it doesn't accept anything else, so I saved the exported Genesis figure as a genesis.cr2 in C:\Daz 3D\Applications\Data\DAZ 3D\My DAZ 3D Library\Runtime\libraries\Character, then attempted to load that in GenX2. As far as I can tell it's installed correctly.

I's been a few years since I've used Daz, so I'm aware I'm missing something, of else GenX2 no longer works with Daz. I'm using 4.24

  • WendyLuvsCatzWendyLuvsCatz Posts: 40,144

thats not how you do it with genesis characters

you need to convert to Genesis 2 first if I recall, I cannot check now

  • MadbatMadbat Posts: 388

I just figured out that I may be an idiot. I'm selecting/deselecting morphs to transfer now.

In my defence, It's been 4 years since I did any arting.

been a while for me too but I did manually transfer a Genesis 2F character to Genesis 9 the hard way yesterday

took me all day, lots of autofitting of clone shapes, reposing, obj exports and morphloader fluffing around

and hoping ERC frieeze after adjusting rigging to shaoe didn't crash studio

were a few crashes at various stages devil pity we lost Dimension 3D

the texture conversions took even longer using Ultimate unwrap 3D repaint

I'm still having issues with it not loading any actual genesis morphs, but I'll keep fiddling and reading the pdf.

well serves me right for being so pompous

apparently  not all of them will install to my multiple versions of D|S4 on my Win10

it all works on my Win7 in my last build there which is not 4.25 as win7 no longer supported

I have Gen X on my latest build, legacy to Genesis 1 only

Gen X 2 apparently only in the saved D|S4.11 build and only does genesis 2 and 3

copying plugin folders not fixing it

it's an installation issue and now I have to fight Microsoft Security to boot

Gen X 2 does some fiddling with the registry (current library structure at the time of installation), and only installs for the Public version. The installer only has directives for DAZ Studio_4.5 (the General release), whereas newer plugins also target "4.x Public Build" and "4.x Private Build". Not sure how multiple versions are affected.

The data files are also only installed to "AppData/DAZ 3D/Studio4/GenX2" (for the general release) and need to be copied to "AppData/DAZ 3D/Studio4PublicBuild/GenX2" to be used by the Public Build. If there are different folders for each installation, I presume the data files need to be copied for each one.

    I can't find the registry entries (genx2, genx 2, gen x 2, generation x2, generationx2, yada, yada), but i know I saw it.
