Will clothes for G8.1M work on G8M or will the auto fit explode the size of the saved source file like is the case if I use G3M or G9 clothing?

They will work but only with some work in DS. In the scene tab, click on the hamburger then select Edit->Scene Identification
Change the base from Genesis 8.1 male to Genesis 8 Male.
Now it should fit without getting the autofit popup.
Ideally no one should save any clothing as for G8.1, only for G8, since G8.1 can wear clothes made for either base without having to fiddle around with the scene identification.
No, it is the other way around. The character is G8M and the clothing is G8.1M
I tried to change the base from G8M to G8.1M but G8.1M does not come up in the drop down as an option.
Yes, I knew the character was G8M. That is why the scene identification of the G8.1M clothing needs to be altered to G8M, so that it will then fit without trying to autofit.
Remember to change the identification of the clothing, not the figure.
It is the Preferred Base you need to change, click on the three dots then scroll up to select Genesis 8/Male as the new Preferred Base.
Why not just use Genesis 8.1 Male? Some scripts may be a bit fiddly if theya re hard-coded in a way that expects Genesis 8, but materials, hair, clothes, and characters should work transparently.
For the record, if you don't want to have a big scene file when you use autofit:
Now when you save your scene it will simply contain a reference to the converted asset, not all the data of the auto-fitted items.
Bonus: you now have the converted version of the clothes in your library and can use it directly in another scene if you want.
thank uou
Brilliant!
