Some Casual Bryce Questions

It's been a heck of a long time since I used Bryce.  I do have the latest version, but at the moment, not installed.

I was reading a thread and it got me wondering how the Daz Bridge works with Daz Studio.  Is use of the bridge limited to legacy characters, and is it a 'Live Bridge' where, for example, you could change the pose in Daz Studio and the pose automatically updates in Bryce?  I'm just trying to get a picture of what the compatibility is like.  I understand it's possible to bring-in any object in OBJ format, and that's perfect of course, but figure-wise it's really the Daz Studio compatibility I'm curious about.  For example, does 4.24 work with the Bryce bridge, and can we use the bridge on Genesis 8, 8.1, and 9?

Another thing I'm curious about, is Linux.  Has anyone gotten Bryce 7 PRO to run on Linux?
And if so, which distro do you recommended?

I have to say it's really nice to see Bryce alive and kicking!  It  must surely be considered a genuine cult at this point, so a big thumbs-up to everyone who keeps it alive, because ultimately, software only ever dies when it can no longer be run, and no one is using it.

At this point, I have no idea about the Linux situation, but if it should happen that Bryce can be run on Linux, then, in effect, the software becomes eternal, because it will always be able to run regardless of what Daz or any OS manufacturer decides.  That's the beauty of Linux of course, and personally I'm about to perform an SSD reformat and intend to play around with some Linux distros, and that's kinda why my interest in Bryce has been renewed, because if I can have it running on Linux, then I know that it can never be taken away from me, and that would absolutely make it worth getting into again.

COMIXIANT - Bryce 7.1 works with the Studio bridge, at least with 4.8, I have no newer, but it works also with Studio 2 and 3. You can create and modify an object in Studio and put it over the bridge to Bryce. I do not think you can modify it in Bryce, then put it back over the bridge to Studio and alter it more just to send it back to Bryce. Be aware that the materials between studio and Bryce are not compatible as such and need a lot of modification.

I am also interested to know whether Bryce also work on Linux and Wine on Windows 7/10/11 and what version is best. I had played around with Linux (I think Redhat and SUSE v.9 but this is a long time ago, I think I used it with Windows 3 at the time). Currently, I run Bryce 7.1 Pro on Win 2000, XP, 7 and 10.

    Thanks for the feedback, Horo!

I'll definitely give it my very best shot, you have my word on that.  I'm currently on Windows 10 Pro, and although Bryce would run on it, I am moving over to Linux (completely and permanently) very soon, possibly even as soon as next Saturday.

I've decided to go with Linux Mint 22 Cinnamon.  It's one of the few that ticks all the boxes for me.  Barebones as possible.  The Cinnamon interface is even cleaner and nicer to use than Windows.  It's based on Debian/Ubuntu for maximum compatibility.  It is said to be one of the most successful distros ever for working with WINE, and now even has a sensible LTS policy.

Other than Daz Studio (and Bryce), all of the software I use these days has a naitive Linux release anyway, so I really hope to be able to bring both along with me.  I'll update the thread with my findings, hopefully browsing the forum on Linux Mint Cinnamon when I do!

Should be next weekend now.  I intended to make a start over the weekend that just passed, but found a whole bunch of stuff I needed to backup first.

That said, I did at least get the Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.1 ISO written to a USB stick, all ready to go!

Haven't got to the stage of installing a distro to SSD yet, but I've been playing with various live images and would just like to point out that the distro I mentioned above isn't what I thought it was.  I'd say it's far from bare-bones, and in fact the best distro I've tired so far one called  Zorin, or to be more precise, the version called Zorin Core, which, when they retire Lite is the most basic version going forward.

Easy the cleanest, nicest, best interface I've tried, and it even has the option to set-up Windows programs directly.  Unfortunately, the Windows stuff cannot be tested unless it's installed to your SSD, and since I've not done that yet, I'm unable to comment on running Bryce on it.

I really have my fingers crossed on that one, because if Bryce (and Daz Studio) runs on Zorin, that would be perfect, because Zorin is very clean, customisable and very Windows-like without any of the privacy BS and forced updates that come with Windows.

Is there any way to run Bryce 7 Pro in widowed mode so that it does not take the whole screen.  I'm running in on Windows 10.  Thanks.

jjoyner - no, unfortunately not. Bryce is always full screen.

    @Horo,

Thanks.  I suspected so but after many years of only ocassionally playing around with Bryce, I had to finally ask.
