Portable holes!
in The Commons
Is there a way to "model" empty space? An invisibility field? I keep wishing for portable holes, so I could take a solid wall, and add cutouts for doors and windows wherever I like. Is there some 3d voodoo I can use in DS to make this happen? If I had my portable hole, the dream of modular, customizable interiors would be within my grasp!

Without actually modeling the wall in question in Hexagon, I'd go with Opacity maps. Make a large white square in photoshop/GIMP and then draw black shapes as the holes. Create a plane primative in DS and then load the opacity map to either Opacity (3DL) or Cutout (Iray) strength channel.
Also Collective3D has this in the store:

Which may help with setting up a custom room.
There's also

and its addons
Or do 2 renders - one with a 'green-screen' where you want the hole to be, and another with the interior/other side. Then in GIMP/PS, you remove the bright green/whatever colour and place that layer over the other one (just pay attention to angles and lighting when you render).
there is a way but not sure how to do it in D|S
its called shadowcatch
I don't know f there is an iray mat shader that would do this
What application are you using?
You can select and hide polygons in DAZ Studio to make them invisible and see through them, although limitations there are there actually have to be polygons to hide (if the entire wall is a single polygon, you wouldn't be able to use this method to put a window in the middle, it would only work if it was composed of a bunch of polygons.). And of course if the model has an inside and outside, you'd have to create your own window/door frame so there wasn't just a hollow spot in the middle.
It the surfaces pane: To select individual polygons and create a new surface: Tools > "Geometry Editor". In the viewport, click on one poly to select it then hold Ctrl down and select any other polygons you want (or optionally you can right-click, Geometry > "selection mode" and select with a rectangle (marquee) or by freehand drawing (lasso)). To remove a polygon from a group of selected polygons, ALT key and Left Mouse. Right click and choose Geometry Assignment > Create Surface from Selected. Give the new surface a name. You will then see a new material zone in the "Surfaces (color)" pane. You can set it to 0% opacity to make it permanently hidden.
As sriesch says the basic idea can be done with the Geometry Editor, just play with a throwaway, primitive cube or two to get started as there is at least one "point of no return", and at least three different "selection types" with that method.
In Hexagon the "Disassociate" tool definitely lets you cut a hole in a plane, say. Once you have disassociated or "loosened" an indicated polygon you can change the pivot point of the piece you've "cut way" or "cut out". Presto, the result is a cheap hinge for a "door" that can be sent back to DS
I think the "back and forth" business, of sending stuff out of DS to Hexagon and back again, is important for flexibility.
The second of my threads that I fired and forgot. All good suggestions here, thanks for the replies.
I believe this is what you want - an ACME® portable hole.
Maybe an Iray section plane node if you're using iray?

"I've got a hole in me pocket."
Man it would be so great if this actually worked. Anyone know how to get the red rectangel to NOT disappear before selection?
There is a model 'Portal' by Namtar3D that does this sort of thing. I've not looked at it in detail to see how it's done, but you could download the freebie here: https://www.renderosity.com/freestuff/items/96337/portal-prop-for-hdri-environments

I remember portable holes from early Donald Duck comicbooks, and b/w cartoons with Felix the Cat (I think)
But Ringo said "I've got an 'ole in me pocket."
Bryce could do boolean operations, as in negative volumes.
I do wish that DS had an integrated boolean modifier.
The GesCon stuff, which entirely remeshes the whole thing, just isn't as elegant as something like Blender does.
Not sure if this could do exactly what you need, but the name is NOT intuitive. Pharaonic Relics by Marshian.

[Edit] HA HA HA! I just went back and saw this is a post from 2017. Oh well.... In case anyone is still curious...
