Installing Daz to a new pc + Moving from Poser to Daz
Hello, people!
I've been using poser nonstop since 2008. I have Daz installed on my pc for a few years, now. played around with it a little, but I always got drawn back to my comfort zone. I got used to poser's interface and learned to work around it's downfalls (using octane render as my rendering engine, improving the working characters, etc).
Daz fascinated me for many years, especially with it's avid community and so much new content (and amazing characters for G3/G8 which I couldn't properly use in poser even with the importer).
Now I have a new pc with 5090RTX and I find myself in a crossroads again: if I want to keep using poser+octane, I'll have to upgrade both since my licenses doesn't support my new gear. it got me thinking again on Daz, Iray, G3, G8...and what would it take for an artist like me to finally migrate or at least learn Daz enough so I could use it just as I use poser.
so, my questions for you people:
1. What would be the best way to move my Daz with all of it's content from my old pc to the new one? maybe since I barely used it, reinstalling everything from scratch would be the right way to go?
2. Are there any tutorials recommended specifically for poser people who seeks to move over/learn Daz? where should I start?
3. I trust that with Daz, support for my new GPU is already built into Iray and I won't need the octane plugin anymore, am I correct?

DS 4.x doesn't support your 5090 for Iray rendering, you will need DS2025 for that.
Thank you! I'll make sure to download and install this version.
Not sure about learning the differences between Daz and Poser but Jay Verluis has an excellent Daz 101 series on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/@WPguru
Thank you! terrific!
I'm going to reinstall everything from scratch. Any tips from veteran users? I wish to install all of the content outside of the software instalation itself (so not on c:). and I would like to plan for future migration to another pc. will it be best to install everything on a network drive?
Content should work fine on a network or external drive, but keep the application and plugins on a physical drive as some people reported problems installing them on a network drive.
You can install your content outside of the default folders with DIM by adding an install path in DIM preferences :
1. Open Advanced Settings in DIM, then go to Installation tab
2. Click the "+" at the bottom of the tab to add a new content path shortcut. Give it a name, and select the folder you want to install to, then accept
3. Once the new shorcut is created, select it in the list next "Content path shortcuts"
After that DIM will install your content to the new location.
Then you need to add your new install folder as a content directory in DS preferences.
1. Go to Edit > Preferences, then in the preferences window select "Content" tab and then "Content Directory Manager".
2. In the content directory manager, add your new install directory under both "Daz Studio Formats" and "Poser formats"
If you want to use a network drive you can, but you will have to map its path to a local drive letter (at least for Windows) as UNC paths are not supported. If you go to the Advanced Settings in Install Manager you can set the content path separately from the application path, but DS won't automatically pick that up so you will either need to synch the paths manually or use the script under Directory mapping here http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/referenceguide/scripting/api_reference/samples/start to tell DS about the DIM setings (page is, however, currently unavailable0.
Thank you! <3
Thanks! by writing "Network drive" I reffered to a local NAS - all mapped as regular drives with letters. this was I can use one content library on all of my computers (I do it with poser, thought I might do it with Daz as well).
I watched this series after using Daz for a couple of years, and I found tons of things I didn't know.
