G9 Toons

I haven't been following the G9 Toon assets in the shop. Are there a good number of them? Filament textures? I'm just curious about availability, variability, and perhaps popularity. Are there assets I should be looking at if I decide I want to jump into the filament toon offerings.

In my experience, the the type of asset lacking the most is hair (specifically made for filatoon) at the moment. You can convert iray hairs to use filament shaders, but the results are very hit or miss or require a lot of finagling. Some of the genesis 2 freebie hairs convert pretty well, but are still challenging to work with. There were some packs of textures / shaders meant to be used with filament that were released in the past couple months, but it would still be nice if there were more options.

There's a learning curve to getting things to look nice in filament - especially if you're using assets that weren't made for it. But overall it is possible to create some pretty cool stuff, even with the limited quantity of assets

There's a surprising amount of G9 toon stuff in the store now.

I know this is of no use to anyone that isn't adept at creating their own stuff, but I've gotten some really good Daz-native results by creating SBH with a low density setting and like fairly thick width.  Then just set it to a tesselation of 3 and apply the Toon Hair shader.

If you're a modeller, Toon-ready geo-based hair can be created fairly quickly with this tut too

Oh wow, didn't even know SBH was a viable option with the toon hair shader. May end up trying that out

And unfortunately I'm not a modeller, but it's cool you're getting good results from that!

Do Geoshells work? Or specifically geoshell clothing, like stockings?

It would be nice if the the limited filtering in the store included a G9 Toon / not Toon option.

I wish there was more content. Yes I realize I can make my own and recolor stuff using filament shaders, however, toon shaders stuff doesn't look that great on a lot of the modern dforce wire hair when you might want a more stylized look.  I cringe when I see pas selling horrible wire mesh hair that looks chunky and pixelated.

Also without more material zones the clothing doesn't look good.

I would like to see more characters, outfits and clothing for the characters and more stuff for men.

There is also a lack of quality in a lot of toon stuff. I still want hair movement. And details.

On the main store page (also selection pages), use the Show Filters dropdown. You'll find a Toon checkbox under Genre. Then you can check G9 under Figures. It works fairly well as long as you aren't using the Categories dropdown in the blue band to further limit your search. For some reason, the 2 don't play nicely, or at all, with each other.

Of course, toon items older than a few months won't have Filatoon shaders.

Yeah, well it angers me that when there's a sale "Choose from these 30,000 items" that the categories dropdown doesn't even exist. Sorry. Had to vent. I wish the filters had another grouping: "Sales" Permanent in "Sales" would Plus/Premiere sales/freebies. And then there'd be today's sale, yesterday's, etc.

Hearing things don't play nicely triggered my vent. Sorry.

I don't think Filatoon is popular because a lot of DAZ users (just like the countless IRL people I've met) seem to be of the opinion that photorealism is the superior form of art. Even when you look at the newest renders at any art/gallery site, you will still see Iray renders dominating everything. (When Iray was first introduced, it was quickly adopted for this reason.)

Personally, I like and use V3Digitimes' V3D FilaToon, Converter, Manager and Tools. Took me a few minutes to get used to, since I am a dummy when it comes to scripts. I really should try to experiment with the settings but the default/automatic output works as a base for what I want to do. In this render, I converted the character and his clothes. (Then, gave him toon eyelashes and custom toon eyebrows.) Tweaked the geoshell colors, since I feel the default black outlines look "unflattering." But it really depends on what kinds of toons you want to create. I want to make more "semi-realistic" or "rotoscope-style" toons to make use of all my morphs, so this render is an example of my goals. But most people want anime style (from roughly 1990s to 2010s) or whatever popular "western adult cartoon" style is trending.

I agree with wanting more hair. The older hairs usually work decently, but they often don't look "simplistic" like this base G9 Toon Hair.

Filatoon is a lot newer than Iray despite Filament having been around for some time, so I don't think it's fair to judge it's popularity against a much more developed market space. There are always folks who give a kneejerk reaction to NPR styles, that doesn't mean there's no market for them. And I recall quite a bit of folks complaining when Iray started overtaking 3dl.

Yep, geoshells are one of the things that currently work really well with filatoon with minimal hassle (for makeup, skin details, clothing, etc).
