So what -is- the purpose of the camera headlamp?

I am not a new user, but it's something I've thought about off and on ever since I was a newbie.

Pretty much every piece of advice for better lighting starts with "turn off the camera headlamp." And sure enough, the renders always look better with the headlamp off!

So... why would anyone ever leave the headlamp on? Why is there even a headlamp on the camera in the first place?

Is it just a legacy left over from when it served a more useful purpose? Does it actually have value in some cases? Am I overthinking this? (Yes)

Well, backward compatibility is certainly a reason. It can also be useful when doing test renders, especially in an enclosed space where the default Irasy environment settings won't help. It also ensures that new users are not - literally - left in the dark when they first use the application, and some people do like the look.

I suspected the rationale was something along these lines, but I wasn't quite sure.  indecision
