March Madness Re-extended...

KsSamKsSam Posts: 10

What is the deal with this March Madness sale still going in April? It's April 6th! That’s not March Madness anymore — that’s just April denial! Thirty-seven days of the same sale! Thirty-seven! At this point it’s not a sale, it’s a lifestyle. Did the marketing team go on vacation and leave a sticky note that just said ‘Keep it goin’? I mean, how mad is March? And how long can you milk one month before you start selling ‘July Christmas’?

They started in February, too, so it's more than thirty-seven. Perhaps the madness was thinking it would only be confined to... wait for it... March.

So far I'm calling this April Aggrivation.

...it appears to have been timed to coincide with the big American college basketball tournament of the same name which comes to an end on Monday with the final championship  game. Saturday was the "final four", basically the "semi-final" match-up to determine which two teams will vie for the national championship title.

This is literally how the March Madness sale works every year. It normally runs from about a week before March to a week after the end of March. It is the same every year. You can Google it and you'll find posts of people talking about it working like this from years ago

Yep, and this is not the only sale that gets overextended to within an inch of its life regularly ...

    1. It's still done to death

    2. Timing a sale to one kind of sportsball makes no sense when they don't do it for the other sportsballs (this more a commentary in general, not on your post in specific)

    3. Then don't call it "extended" after saying it's the final hours/days/whatever. Just be honest about it. Yes I know it's a common tactic around here. That doesn't make it any less irritating to those who prefer straightforwardness.

    4. Can't find the post, but someone else mid-February listed the start dates of the MM's back many years, and no, they didn't all start in February. The conclusion reached from that post (for those trying to predict) was that there wasn't really a way to predict it.

If we're lucky, yes. If @kyoto_kid is right about the timing vs the sport, then probably tomorrow.

It's fine. I think it could actually continue tomorrow - extended but they probably will want to say "Very last day. We mean it this time," and that will be extended another day or two. And then it'll be gone and we'll all have sticker shock until the next big sale.

The only other note I can make is, prices don't look  that impressively low just on the page, especially for Daz+ items. There does seem to be the expectation of having premier and tokens and buying new items to achieve ultra low prices. And all that would mean spending a lot more than I spent. And even what I spent likely would not have happened without the free 2 weeks of Daz+ that Daz gave me last week.

....back in 2011 when Brigham Young University (located in Utah) was in the torunament and made it to the regional semiinals, Daz gave out 3$ or 5$ coupons each time the team advanced.

It's a nice effect of MM that one can get new products for much better prices than usual, I do like that. This feature could continue indefinitely, imo.

Marketing isn't my field, but I suspect that "Oh puh-lese! Will this never end?" isn't what you want people thinking about your brand or ad campaign.

Am I right in remembering MM popping up all the way to June last year? Random days of Madness Returns or some such.

  • tsroemitsroemi Posts: 3,485

Oh dammit, now all IH Kang stuff can be got at a really low price ... I'm doomed ...

    @Ainm you're right, that happened!

Last year IIRC March Madness actually ended at the end of March (or maybe April first). April was mostly welcoming new PAs, with a "March Madness flashback" at the end of April. There was a "2024 catch-up" in May too.

Sigh... I really don't know how to measure this MM anymore. The MAD Door prize thing has continued to be a complete and total wash... I think I might have bought one item during the first week but after that it wasn't even worth reading, as the selection never seemed to change and everything listed was all stuff that I've passed over dozens of times in the past, often at better discounts.  The PA for a Day type deals, on the occasions when they were offered, were a bit better, but even there so many of the items that were offered were ones that have already been super-discounted to that same price or even lower many times, so even though the new and seemingly arbitrary addition of the "only 4 items" limit per cart was annoying, it never really became an issue as it has been in the past.

Honestly, if I hadn't switched to Premier and started earning tokens at a ridiculous rate and been able to buy every single cart with 8 tokens stacked on top of all of the other discounts, I definitely wouldn't have bought as much as I did... especially since DAZ seemed to be using the sale discounts to hide the fact that the relative price of products is sneaking up again even as the store is filling up with a lot of what I consider nominal "filler" products like 2nd party textures for old clothing and hair, not to mention all of the thousands of products that I bought previously at Rendo and now have to carefully doublecheck at both stores to prevent accidental double-purchase.

On the flip side, I have to wonder how much the PAs are making on this sale when the average prices of new products were popping into my cart at a 75% discount or better, while products only a few months old were averaging discounts in the mid to high 80s...

I also don't know exactly why people complain about reduced prices here. I use MM, the euro is currently reasonably good, so I don't care if it's March, April or even May. A sale is not a sacred ceremony.

Maybe they've just forgotten it still runs? Or maybe everything is operated by bots now, and THEY've forgotten?

I think it's a desire for novelty, some folks want a different sale game. This sale game is actually fine, especially on the weekends.

"Your Wishlist just WENT MAD." Nope, not my idea of a Good Wishlist Sale.

    1. Requires Newly Mad buy-in.

    2. Only discounts 2 limited item categories.

    3. Only +10% discount.

OTOH, lovely discounts on FirstBastion items, with no buy-ins, not even if you count Gold Star.

I don't see anyone complaining about reduced prices... quite the opposite.  The main complaints I see are 1.) in the eratic variations of the discounts to get to those prices on a day to day basis, with less than year old items being a flat $20.+ list price one day and then 79% off that price the next, and then yet another discount the day after that, and 2.) of the devaluation of items in terms of what you get for the base price, as in the case of the DAZ Core bundles, where in the six months since the introduction of DAZ Ppemier and it's monthly free bundle coupon, we've seen the pricing in the core figure bundles go from an average of 6 items in a bundle for a $99.98 base price, to 5 items for the same price, and now with Chloe 9 to just 4 items in the bundle for a $94.98 base price, all in the time since Premier and it's "free bundle per month" were introduced... which effectively equals a 25% reduction in the value of that monthly coupon.

For a month and a half now, I've logged in every single to check out what the new sale will be. As soon as I see it's still March Madness, I log back out and go to Renderosity to shop. Finally, after the absolute final weekend of MM, I log in on Monday, only to see it's been extedned an additional 24 hours. On a positive note, the sale has reminded me that I have enough product and don't really need to buy anything new. So... thanks for that.

  • ...and if/when it's over tomorrow, and everything is back to 51% off (maybe, with 8 tokens) for new items and some uninspiring sub 75-80% discounts on non-new items, that will be  ... better?

I get it that this sale has run its course and it's time to move on, but the truth is, getting stuff for 84-96% off for the last month (and a half) has not been torture, and regular prices will result in paralyzing sticker shock.
