It is nice to have hairs that are not over-volumed.

Did you mean NOT over-volumed. This hair does not look over-volumed at all to me.

Yeah, I'm thinking this as well - and it's a really nice hair, too!

It looks like hair someone might actually have. dForce doesn't do much to it, though. I used the left wind morph to swing it to the side a little. The cardigan and collar are from https://www.daz3d.com/dforce-hnc25-knit-cardigan-outfit-for-genesis-9. I applied a fabric shader to the collar, because it only comes in plain white.

In fact, I agree with Richard. Hair items do tend to be over volumed.
The first custom morphs I usually add, is to lower volume, in order to minimize that hair dressers' promo look.

    Beautiful portrait!

Thanks, Toyen. Are all the hair colors, even pale blonde, supposed to have a nearly black hair base? That surprised me.

Yes. I find that darker hair base matches the color of the hair roots more than the actual matching hair color. At least under neutral lighting conditions that I use to set up the hair colors.
If you feel like it's too dark for your light setup it can be easily adjusted. :)

I usually see the dark roots as a sign that the hair is died instead of natural.

Right. I'm not fond of a large color variation between roots and tips. But surfaces can be adjusted, and other shaders can be applied for other looks. I've only rendered this one brown color so far. There are a lot of surfaces to play with in this hair if you want to customize.

Thanks for the explanation and confirmation. I did in fact lighten the base in this render. My lighting is a portrait studio HDRI but I added some more backlight in this render. It's overall fairly bright, I guess.
